Default OCZ Goes Public with SPD-Z Utility

It's a cutthroat market in the world of RAM, giving consumers no shortage of companies to choose from, but making it increasingly harder for one manufacturer to stand out from the next[...]OCZ knows this perhaps better than anyone, with a lineup of RAM that includes such buzzwords as Vista Special, System Elite, Special Ops, SLI-Ready, AM2 Special, Platinum, Titanium Alpha, Reaper, and more. But their newest foray into the limelight isn't another clever naming scheme, but a new beta utility that's going public. It's called SPD-Z, and with it, you'll be able to flash and reprogram your RAM's SPD settings.

LOL, the name is taken off CPU-Z is seems. Too bad it's for OCZ modules only. I don't see why you can't just go into the BIOS and manually set the timings, though.

You still would be, but by flashing the SPD settings, you're making the changes permanent, and they'll be recognized in any motherboard. But I just don't see the point. If you're a tinkerer and you move a reflashed kit to a new motherboard, you're still going to futz around in the BIOS, and there's no guarantee that those tighter timings will remain stable from one board to the next. Factor in the possibility for fraud, and I just see too many downsides, and for what? The upside eludes me.

Yep, so you could potentially set instable timing permanently. Now that you think about it, doesn't seem all that helpful of a program.

OH DAMN, I didn't even think about the shady resellers "re-badging" memory! That is definitely something watch out for and I don't know how OCZ is going to keep from preventing this.
