Default Adding RAM

I've got an oldish HP running 512MB (2x256MB). I pulled one stick out and it says 256MB DDR PC2700 CL2.5. If I want to upgrade, can I buy any PC2700 memory?

I see a few options on NewEgg for 2x1GB at about $100 bucks. If I get these can I add to my existing 512MB for 2.5GB?

check out your mobo specs online to be sure but you should be able to add another 2GB with no problem as long as there are empty slots and your mobo allows it.

You should be able to use any PC2700 DDR memory with a CAS latency of 2.5, but you might want to check on the HP website and see what brands they recommend. Usually it doesn't matter, but sometimes those pre-built machines can be very picky about memory and there might be subtle differences between the different memory manufacturers that could cause issues with the HP BIOS's. Usually Corsair Value Select or Kingston Value RAM are the best choices for these types of applications.

HP says: As per the specifications of the system, the memory specifications of the system is as follows :

The motherboard has four dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets. Minimum memory module size is 64 MB; maximum memory module size is 512 MB. The BIOS automatically detects memory type, size, and speed.
The motherboard supports the following memory features:
Pre installed memory is 512MB.
184-pin DDR-DIMMs
PC2100 (266 MHz), PC2700 (333MHz) and PC3200 (400 MHz) DDR-SDRAM
unbuffered, non-ECC (64-bit) DIMMs
2.5 V memory only
2.0 GB maximum memory
Dual Channel memory configurations
Note: The maximum memory figures quoted for each motherboard are based on the most current maximum HP-approved memory capacity for each motherboard.
While many of the motherboards' chipsets may support higher maximum memory, HP does not recognize maximum memory figures in excess of the approved limit at this time.

So I've got 2x256 PC2700
Guess I can go full bore and get 4x512MB max at PC 3200.

Any thoughts?

Yep, should be fine.
What are the specs of the computer?

Not in front of it right now, but I believe Pentium 3.0 (bought 5 years ago) with 160GB HD. GPU is Nvidia 5200 or something like it. Wife will use it for iinternet surfing, email and occasional MS word stuff

Check it out carefully for RAM support.
I might have some RAM somewhere for you. DDR400 is likely nothing that I will use anymore, so if I can find it it's all yours.

Hey Polobunny, that's awfully nice of you. I'll hold off ordering for a while. If you find anything you don't want/need shoot me a pm!

Thanks again
