Default 512mb pc 3200 vs 1 gig pc 2700

Which is faster? Suppose both ram are generic but the pc3200 will most likely have tighter timings.

Tyreal and I are trying to build a computer for a friend cuz he doesn't have a very good computer and it will be his belated b-day present. He already has his own generic pc 2700ram and we are wondering weather to drop some money into another 512 stick of pc 2700 or get a new stick of pc 3200.

If you use a 3200 stick with a 2700 stick it will clock both at 2700. But it can't hurt to have a faster stick in there in case he wants to upgarde the other later. Depends on the price difference.

PC3200 all the way. Prices for memory are a bit high compared to last week, but nothing too expensive. You should be able to find some Samsung 512Mb DDR400 around $50 MAX.

Oh something else, be sure the board takes the DDR400. Seeing as you're building a computer for a friend i'd bet it's not an Athlon X2... so depending on the board maybe it can only go to 333mhz. Anyway check it out first so you don't end up buying DDR400 for "absolutely" nothing.

Edit: Also check the ram first. Sometimes they put PC2700 stickers on PC3200 and sell you it as PC2700 because anyway it will downclock So even if the stickers show PC2700 if the memory is realitvely recent it might be PC3200 under there. ;D
