im personally waiting for the release of socket AM2 before considering a jump to dual core. with the release of AM2 and AMD's recent announcement of ending 939 based motherboards and processors i think there will be a short period of time where prices will be low.

Not sure what the conversion is between Canadaian and US $, but I don't think I would pay more than about $320 US $ for one...

As far as waiting to buy one, it's really a tough call. Just remember that if you decide to wait for socket AM2 to upgrade, you will need new RAM (DDR2) in addition to having to get a new motherboard and processor. But of course, when AM2 comes out, s939 prices will start falling more. But the s939 Opterons are so popular, that I have a feeling prices won't change a whole lot on those. The 3800 X2 will probably drop, but the Opty's might not change much. That's just my speculation anyway.

Tough call, figure out the conversion from US to Canadian....as Blake said, anything over $320 is too much.
The Opty 165 is a very good processor (probably the best O/Cing processor available), but its being discontinued.
the 3800 is cheaper, dual core, and overclocks pretty well....you might want to look at that

While I generally despise the waiting game, your current proc is already chugging away at a respectable 2.6GHz. The multitasking performance on a dual-core is great, but given that this isn't a *new* build, it's hard to justify the price, particularly since not much out there is multithreaded...not yet.

Are you willing to pick up a used processor? If so, there should some good deals out there this summer as early adopters jump on the AM2 bandwagon and look to unload their current specs.

I am certainly not moving to AM2 for a long time. Its very possible though that i may use it for my next build.

As Paul said, your CPU is at 2.6 ghz, thats plenty fast. If you really want some speed, get an X2. I've looked at many Canadian stores but they never have any Opty 165 in stock.

If he is going to make the jump to dual-core, I'd recommend sticking with the Opteron 165, assuming other Canadian vendors are priced consistently with NCIX. On NCIX, the 3800+ X2 sells for $398 shipped, only $2 less expensive than the Opteron, which is also dual-core and comes with 1MB L2 cache. Sure the extra cache doesn't really translate to a significant performance boost, but for 200 US pennies, why not?

If you are going to buy from someone, always ask for a "Heatware". Heatware is an online feedback website where people can leave comments on you. Usually you can spot the bad from the good on these.
