Default Upgrade Problem

I upgraded my families computer this afternoon and have one problem that I can't get around.

Original computer.

ECS 848P-A7 motherboard Latest bios
Celeron 325J
512mb ddr400
fx5200
maxtor 100mb ide
XP-Home SP2

I upgraded the cpu to a 520J HT and upgraded the video card to a Radeon 9200.

While booting the bios shows the correct cpu and hyperthreading enabled. The device manager shows an ACPI computer and two 2.8ghz cpu's.

But the task manager shows on cpu graph and it should show two. I tried updating the chipset drivers and also tried disabling HT in the bios and booting and then enabling it and booting and i get the same thing.

I know it is supposed to show 2 graphs, one for each logical cpu and I've done this kind of upgrade before and it automatically adjusts the cpu properties in xp and I never had to do anything extra.

Any ideas?

Its because its running XP home and not Pro. Home is not capable of supporting 2 physical processors. HOWEVER!

Note: Windows XP Home can use a maximum of one (1) physical processor. However, because Hyper-Threading is supported, the operating system takes advantage of the second (virtual) processor.
Windows XP and Hyper-Threading

So really its using it, its just not showing it.

Sorry, I've done this before. That isn't correct. A hyperthreading cpu will show 2 graphs in the task manager.

Thats always the cure all isn't it?

Normally I would say that reinstalling windows isn't necessary for a Video Card and CPU upgrade. In this case it will probably fix your problem. Typically reinstalling windows is only necessary when installing a new Mother Board.

I know your not a **** jph, and this is a kindergarten solution to a college problem.

LOL.....thanks for your answers. I guess I need to remember how to reinstall without losing all my settings and installed programs. If I'm gonna do all this, I may as well upgrade them to Sata at the same time. I've got an extra 80 gb Sata drive that would really pep them up.

Have you tried updating and/or reinstalling the chipset drivers? Also see this:

Intel HT Support - It is critical that the INF utility is installed in order to optimize platform performance with Intel Pentium 4 processor-based systems using Microsoft Windows XP. It is also critical that the INF utility is installed first before any other drivers.

INF Link

When I installed my Opteron this morning, at first it only showed 1 CPU graph until I rebooted, then it showed two. It has something to do with it switching from Uni-Processor mode to Multi-Processor mode.

Ah - found this on another forum.

Do this

"Control panel > system > hardware > device manager > expand computer menu> right click "ACPI uniprocessor PC" > update driver > don't go to MS update, chose to install from list, select "ACPI multiprocessor PC" > install > reboot"

Hope this helps
