Default Question about upgrading to dual core

Right now, I am running an A64 3700+. But since we got our dual core laptop a while back, I have been thinking I should upgrade to a dual core cpu for my rig. I have been reading stuff to the effect that I need a dual core windows patch and some kind of fix, a BIOS upgrade and that reinstalling windows is necessary before dual core will work. Is all this necessary before I can run a DC processor? What about my chipset drivers? Do I need to update that as well?

I have thought about getting the A64 X2 4400+, and the X2 4400+(89W) has been recommended to me as well.

When I upgraded to dual core, I only needed to install the windows patch. My motherboard accepted it without a BIOS flash. I think reinstalling windows would be unnecessary. Chipset drivers should be fine.

The A64 X2 3800+ are the best choice IMO. I bought one mid-summer during the price cuts and it must have been one of the my best upgrades ever. It's a great clocker to boot. I'm currently at 2.8GHZ @ stock voltage.

My experience with dual core is... flawed. I've seen far better DC CPU's than mine and to tell you the truth it makes me regret my purchase, seeing as my 3700+ single core was a great overclocker.
Overall, i'm not quite sure dual core is a good thing for the consumer. Because really, to the eye dual core looks exactly like single core. :)

Motherboard make model would be helpful =O

Really, the only reason I would see going to dual core is for gaming and rendering a crap load of stuff (or running ALOT of programs), and alot of 1-1.5 year old games don't support DC (or only from a patch).

I would upgrade the motherboard if you could, sounds like your on 939, which means DDR400 and such. Go socket T and get a Core 2 Duo! >:D

My motherboard is DFI LanParty UT nF4-D, socket 939 with 2x1GB DDR3200.
I like my current cpu, as it has really given me a great boost in overall gaming performance as opposed to my P43.2ghz that I had before, but one complaint I've had is that unlike the P4, it doesn't handle more than one thing at a time very well, and I got so used to the P4 just being able to go all over the place and handle a lot of stuff. Gaming on the P4 was okay, but it was pretty quick with multitasking.
I have FEAR and some other games that are 1-2 years old. Would they NOT run with dual core? Could I not set affinity for certain games to run through run core?

It might be time for a Windows re-install, because my 3700+ didn't choke when multiple applications were running. Infact, I think this 3800+ X2 chokes more. =|

Hmm. How does your X2 choke and your singlecore not?

Wouldn't that sort of negate the whole point of running two cores?

You really won't see any performance improvement in games by going from a single core to dual core. The gains will be found in multithreaded apps and heavy multitasking.

HERE is a great little guide on the AMD support forums on how to get everything working correctly with your Athlon64 X2 and the hotfixes. THIS is also a pretty similar guide but presented in a little different way.

if you would really use apps that can put a dualcore to use then go for it, otherwise you will not see any real performance increase aside from F@H

Thanks HL and Corsair!
