Exclamation Quad-core processors are out!

You read the subject right. Intel has released the quad-core CPU formerly under the code name "Kentsfield". Even better, the first quad-core chips are not server processors, but for ordinary PCs. But according to a very recent article in PC World, it is outperformed by the Core 2 Extreme, aka E6800.

Not that they are out, the PC world should get a whole lot more interesting.

Someday I'll be telling my kids that I was there the day quad-core came out. And then my kids will yawn and say, "How lame. Those things didn't even have reverse hyper-threading and they couldn't even overclock those things past 4.5Ghz!"

Or maybe even worse, I wonder how that work on using light packets in CPUs instead of electricity is coming along?

According to some experts, they consider Intel's new quad cores to not be 'true' quad cores. They are simply pairs of dual core dies slapped together in the same chip package.

They also insinuate that Intel is 'cheating' by releasing these cores earlier (by as much as six months) than AMD in order to be the first to say that they have the first quad core procs available. Of course, AMD hasn't rolled out their quad's yet, becase unlike Intel, their quads will be considered to be true quad cores, as their processors will integrate four cores on a single die.

All lies, there are no such thing as quad-core processors.
...
Or computers.

Garet is exactly correct.......on everything he said. Everyone I've talked to has describes some pretty irritating heat issues with their "Quad Core" processors, and the fact that they are not overclocking very well

Now if more software was multithreaded I might be more interested in this. Other then the technical issues Quad Core seems to be having right now, I see no practical use in a Home/Office environment.

hmmmm the QX6800 is actually 2 E6600 Core2Duo procs stuck together... as the E6600 were the worst of the overclocking bunch of Core2s, plus as most applications are still at best multi-threaded for 2 cores, its no wonder that most of the reviews are still showing the higher clocked X6800 as better.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

you are right also.....we have some sharp marbles here!!!!
Dual core processors are plenty for the foreseeable future

Some are still arguing weather or not Dual Core is even practical. As a Geek, I think that the idea of Quad Core is awesome, but the practical use for it just isn’t there yet. Once software catches up to the hardware it might be justifiable. I don’t see Quad Core making the big impact that Dual Core made a little over a year ago
