Default quad core cpu question

How do you tell if a CPU is compatible with your motherboard, is it just the socket number you need to look at ?

Also are quad cores compatible with all programs and games and motherboards for eg. mine?

You have to look up what's compatible with your specific chipset.

Your mobo is compatible with Quads, just checked for you.

What kind of programs do you run?

You would look in the P965 specs to see if the quad you want to run is compatible with it. And yes, you can run quads on that board as Parker said.

What program are you using for that exactly? It really depends on the specific program as far as whether you will see a performance increase dual to quad.

Well, from my point of view, I don't think it's necessary at all to upgrade to a quad. If you want to upgrade though, I'd suggest the E8400. That will out perform any Q6600, any day (if I'm not mistaken). It also gives out less heat than the Q6600 and is low power consuming.
(It's also cheaper!)

You should be fine with all Core 2 Duos that are 65nm.....but you may have issues with the newer 45nm processors.

Gigabyte and ASUS are both saying that their P965 boards will support Wolfdale and Yorkfields, but others are spotty in their support.

ASUS Maximus Extreme

Sapphire HD 3870X2
