Default Q6600 vs Q6700 worth $250?

What is the real performance increase of the Q6700 at 2.66 ghz vs a Q6600 at 2.4 ghz? I am building a database/gis mapping system that needs great i/o. This will go with a ASUS P5K WS MB, 2 to 4 gb pc2 8500 memory, and two 150gb WD Raptors Raid 0. Also, would a Xeon processor be better for this system?

Personally, a $265 price difference between the Q6600 and a Q6700 is not worth it. Why? Because you are basically paying a severe premimum for an extra 260Mhz - in other words, paying one dollar per Mhz when you could easily overclock the Q6600 to Q6700 speeds on air alone. Besides, the Q6600 is at an excellent price point, and with the extra money saved, you can spend it on some quality memory.

The Q6600 is the best processor available for the money right now.
I'm finishing up an E6600 vs E6850 vs Q6600 vs QX6850 article......and the results show the Q6600 can hang with any processor out there, and has four cores for future applications......

Theres no sense in buying a Q6700, the Q6600 is easily overclocked to stock QX6850 speeds, and depending on the stepping can overclock as far as the QX6850.

ASUS Maximus Extreme

Sapphire HD 3870X2

I would definately go with the Q6600. It's the best bang for the buck quad right now. I got one for about 280 CAD and it was worth it in my eyes. As Capper mentioned, you can easily overclock it to higher speeds.

Thanks ... by CAD do you mean CAD CAM .. like AutoCad? If so, I would be interested in you system build, i/o performance etc. Should be similar to my GIS Mapping application.

The X3220 is a good alternative to the Q6600. They are the exact same chip with a small price saving.

Then why don't more people jump on the Xeon?
