Personally, I'd recommend the E8400, its a bit cheaper and OCs about the same.
I'm currently using mine for benchmarking X48 motherboards, and its 100% stable at 4.27GHz with 1.375V

I just upgraded from an E2140 to an E8400 and it is running very cool and quick. Unless you use a lot of multithreaded applications like 3D rendering or audio/video encoding/decoding, then the E8400 or E8500 is going to be a better buy. For the most part, faster clock speeds will perform better for the average user than more processing cores.

Well then if the E8500 is cheaper than I'd recommend getting it.
It'll overclock a little more or the same as the E8400.

Q6600. Sure you can overclock an E8500, but you can't add 2 more cores to it. As time goes on more software is going to be written to take advantage of the additional cores as well.

But honestly if you can wait a few weeks, I'd go for a Q9450 over both of them.

OcciferPrime Specifications:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.11 GHz
Asus P5K-E/Wifi-AP | Visiontek HD 3870
2 GB OCZ Platinum DDR2-800
WD Raptor 74 GB | WD Caviar 80 GB
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610W

By the time enough software is quad core optimized to make your purchase worth it, chances are both the Q6600 and E8500 are going to be outdated.

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?

The age old "future-proof" argument. The thing you gotta factor in is how is old 65nm technology "future-proof"? 1066 FSB. The Quad is GREAT for those who need quads and utilize all 4 cores, for gamers, the dual core is more than adequate for tasks.

True - a dualie is often quite enough. But because of those extra cores you CAN use the quad longer. Most folks don't upgrade quite as often as we do!
