Default Pen D 930/940/950 vs. Core 2 Duo E6400

Really i'm confused, why people want to buy Core 2 Duo E6400 if the stock speed is 1.8 ghz, while the Pen D 930 at 3.0 ghz?

how much would be the prize difference?
how much can Core 2 Duo E6400 be overclocked vs. Pen D 930?

Not being able to get in touch with my computer enthusiasm make me a dumba$$ with todays tech.

Pleas shed some light guys???

ok well the Core 2 Duo E6400 is an architectural change from the intel pentium d/4 days. see back in the netburst days intel was all about raw mhz. they thought more mhz = better performance. unfortunately for them heat and energy use became an increasing factor to the point where it required cooling techiques only familiar to enthusiasts in order to increase the mhz. that coupled with AMD proving that total raw cpu power doesnt necesarily mean its better (hence why lower clocked athlon(XP/64) could keep up/outperform their equivelant Intel counterparts) ultimately lead to the demise of the netburst architecture.

well after getting tossed about the benchmark ring like a joint at a bob marley concert intel finally said enough is enough and began to search for a new architecture. they purchased an isreali company and asked them to make an enerygy efficient processor that was powerful but had a low power requirement for their moble department. this company set about this project by heavily modifying the pentium 3 core into what eventually became known at the pentium m. development continued into the core duo line of mobile processors. they ran cool and performed admirably.

these processors proved to be a godsend for intel who got the bright idea to modify them into what is now known as core 2 duo. while they have lower clock frequencies, they perform many more instructions per cycle when compared to the older netburst line of processors. in fact the lowly E6400 has performance on par with AMD's vuanted FX 62 and the performance only increases with higher model number.

overclocking the core 2 duo has been rather successfull too. in fact reaching 3+ ghz with a core 2 duo is not a far off idea.

if you have the choice between any of the above listed processors, go with the core 2 duo. it runs VERY cool and has performance to boot.

*correction: it was an isreali firm*

You can't compare the clock speeds of one CPU's architecture to the Clock speeds of another. The clock speed is not a true measurement of the actual speed of the processor. The GHZ war is over, now both Intel and AMD are going more for a Performance and Power consumption happy medium. The more power a CPU consumes the more heat it produces.

Default hmmp???

so its better to spend $316 Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 4MB to overclock at 3.0ghz, than >$200 on Pentium D 945 which can be successfully overclock at 4.0ghz, ...

meaning to say Core 2 Duo Although its a bit expensive will have greater capability to be overclocked and out perform the Pent D family.

But if i'm on a budget? lets say since you'll ganna need newer motherboard, better memory, and greater vga card / sound card...
would Pentium D 930/945 would be enough for me??? :D
since strictly i'm lowering my budget below $1k... T_T

You’re trying to compare 2 different architectures to each other. You’re just going to give yourself a headache. Except the change and move on.

It's not. I tell ya, go with a Core 2 Duo and you won't be deceived. The price is worth it.

Here's an article from HKEPC comparing a X6800 vs a FX-62 vs a Pentium XE 965
