Default Opteron Clocking!

Well for Christmas I had gotten an Opteron 165...

I had seemed to get a decent stepping, and wanted to see what it could do with minimal effort.

First FSB bump, I got this

With some more experementing I hit 2.5GHz (no screen shot)

2.7GHz was a little more difficult. I lowered the ram divider to its lowest (100MHz), I increased the vCore to 1.4, then I put in 300MHz HTT. Rebooted and it started to post. Windows failed to boot. After playing around with the vCore and Ram timings for at least 10 minute, it finally hit me. I still had the HTT multiplier set to high. Dropped it down to the 600MHz multiplier, it posted but still wouldn't boot windows for some reason. So I had to set it to the 400MHz multiplier for it to finially boot windows, and it was 100% Stable at that....(note: That actual vCore is 1.4...)

Yeah, I know the HTT is extremely low, but meh, haven't noticed any performence hit (yet).

One problem though is that my RAM speeds were horrible with bad timings. As I'm not good at tweaking ram.

With the help of my friend, I had managed to get the ram upto 266(532)MHz..Although At this point im not entirely sure if it is infact running at that speeds. CPUz reports 225(450MHz) while Everest says PC-3900. I have the ram divider set to 166MHz + 100 from increased HTT should give me 266MHz. Although I'm not sure, any help here?

UPDATE:

Heres a Super Pi 1M run for the people who want that kind of stuff...

As you can see, I've already run 16m and 32m calculations to test stability...

Your SuperPI times are not that fast, I was expecting higher with the CPU running at 2.7Ghz. I can get similar results with my Athlon64 3800+ single-core, everything at stock speeds. So far I ran the 16M test.

Probably his memory. ;D Besides i'm not sure you fully realize the extent of a full minute on a 16M SuperPI.
For best SuperPI, RAM and CPU at max. Keep playing with it until you hit the sweetspot. Try lowering your ram/cpu ratio to see if you can thighten the timings a bit. Because 500mhz for KVR400X64C3A is quite high, so your timings must be loose, like REAL loose. :P

Cheers for the opty though, looks pretty good. :)

Wow, just realized how low the price is for the O165, pretty good results for that price.

I would get one, only that I live in a strange land called Canada.
Newegg price = $157US
Ncix price = $324Can.($279US)!!!

Any other local stores I checked had their Opteron s939 processors mysteriously vanish, only to be replaced by AM2 or 2XX class opterons.

I know, it's a pain living in Canada. $296Can @ directcanada.com. At this price it's less ridiculous picking up a Athlon X2 4800+ if you're able to find one on s939. =/

@ PC_Guy, the 16m and 32m runs were for testing stabilty. I was running F@H and WCG during those runs along with general PC usage. Thats why they aren't the best.

@Polo, the timings are 3-4-4-8 @ 2.7v. I get better Pi 1M times with my current settings then PC3200 speeds @ 2.5-3-3-7. Actually at 200(400MHz) at 2.5-3-3-7 my Pi 1M time was about 36 seconds with absolutely nothing running. With my current current settings, my Pi 1M time was 33seconds.

My Kingston value ram has TCCC chips, which is basically binned down TCCD. Well thats what I've heard at least...

You should run two instances of SuperPi 32M. Put them in different folders and run them. Use SP2004 if you want to test overnight (blend method).

If that's stable, then nice OC! 50% is great!

Nice CPU clock! The coveted 300x9

About your memory speeds though, the 166 divider essentially multiplies your HTT frequency by .83 (166/200=0.83) to give you your RAM speed. So in your case, it would be 300x.83 = 249 Mhz (or 498 effective DDR) memory speed.

Well, everyone has their own comfort zone of stability; mine just happens to be more than that
