Default Intel Pentium D 920 Presler LGA 775 Dual Core Processor

The Pentium D 920 was to replace the Pentium D 820 as INTEL's entry level, or budget, processor. However the Pentium D 920 became caught between a figurative rock and a hard place. First, the 920 was replaced as the entry level chip by the Pentium D 805 (which we'll cover in a future article). Second, featuring great overclocking potential and improved thermal properties over its predecessor the Pentium D 820, the 920 was cutting into sales of its bigger, and more expensive siblings the Pentium D 930 and 940 processors.
So why are we talking about the Pentium D 920? Mainly because the processor is still widely available (and should be until late Summer), and because in my opinion its price and performance make it a good option for those looking for the benefits provided by dual core processors on the cheap.

Good reading.

I myself am currently running a 920 in a P5WD2-E and love it. Take the 920<$300.00, OC it to 3.73ghz and you have a budget chip turned powerhouse.

BTW blake introduced me to the forum, we both are members at OCForums.com. Nice forum you have going here!

I think we're going to be putting Ranger to work....so you'll probably be seeing a lot more of him.
As to the 920...its a great processor to be quite honest. Although AMD owns the powerhouse CPU sector, between the Pentium D 805 and 920, Intel has carved a nice little niche out of the budget sector

very good point, I was not even considering AMD procs, I need to get my mind out of the Intel gutter, lol.

Welcome to HardwareLogic halutzparilla!

Give us as much information about your system as you can before so we can cater our responses to your specific situation. You should make a signature so you don't have to list your hardware everytime.

i'm planning to use the following
ECS C19-A SLI (1.0A) Socket T (LGA 775)
XFX PV-T73G-UDD3 Geforce 7600GT 256MB
550W Power Supply
Intel Pentium D 930 Presler 800MHz
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1
Seagate Barracuda 120GB 7200 RPM

i'm a ****** with it comes to overclocking CPU, VC, and etc.
i like to know how much would it be the FSB & Voltage i should give to the CPU...

and i also want to know the steps of doing the overclocking, since it would be a big burden to my wallet if i messed all up, US$1400 is not easy to save...
and any other suggestion is welcome since i haven't bought the hardwares yet... i'm still at my planning stage...

When you get the system together, folks here will be able to walk you right through OCing.

Intel systems are OCed by raising the FSB. Intel FSB is quad pumped. This means tha actual FSB of an 800mhz FSB processor is 200mhz x 4.

While the ECS C19A is an excellent choice for a MB, it's not a very strong OCer. I run the board on my test bench, and have done a handfull of reviews using it.

You may or may not know that Intel is releasing a new line of CPUs on the 27th: Core 2 Duo. They are more powerfull and generate less heat then current 9xx. It's something to consider. In order to run Core 2 Duo, you must have a revised 975x board or the brand new Intel 965 chipset. 965 chipset MB are much cheaper then 975, and OC very nice.

On the otherhand , 9XX CPU are excellent processors. I honestly feel that in your budget, you could fit a Core 2 Duo E6300 and a Abit 965 MB.

i was trying to consider Asus P5W plus Intel D 930, but its a bit expensive, i'm trying to shrick it down coz since its been a long time the last time i build a pc, i have not tools and as in i'm starting from scratch.

come to think with it, Core 2 Duo would be a great idea.
