Yes, this is the path Intel is headed toward. They are preaching "multi core" processors as the future of computing and dual core and quad core is the beginning of this. But, of course, in order to fit that much onto a single piece of silicon, they need to redesign the cores to be smaller, use less power, and put out less heat or else it is just not feasable.

As far as quad cores are concerned, I have a hard time believing the benefits will be worth the extra cost (assuming they will be more expensive than dual cores) for the typical desktop user. There are a lot of situations where the potential of dual core processors are barely realized, and I can't see quad core processors adding that much extra performance. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

The quad core "Clovertown" processors mention in the article you linked to are actually chips designed for servers, where computing tasks are very different than what you and I use our computers for; so quad cores may be much more successful in a server situation vs. a single user environment.

Conroe which is coming out in the next couple months, uses substancially less power then current Pentium D CPUs. Matter of fact word is that the power circuitry on current boards cannot support CONRE because of this. Chances are new revisions of current 975X chipsets will have to be released with the updated VRM standard.

well, my bro purchased an p820 dual core processor when it wasn't released yet...and it was dissapointing it gave errors and restarted it self alot even thoug it wasn't ovver heated or anything...not sure if its Intel's fault or the person who sold him this...

well not sure if P820 was the first intel processor

Chances are the person who had the 820 abused it. I've never heard of a bad processor coming out of a retail\oem box. If it wasn't released yet then it can't be intels fault anyway! People get their hands on Engineer Sample chips which have been used for testing and whatnot, then sell them.

Isn't it the BX "Bad Axe" revision 975X boards that will be designed to work with Conroe?

I don't see where dual or quad cores will help the casual desktop user. Those doing a lot of photoshop or processor intensive work then yes it will help but how many people use them that much to justify the extra cost?

Exactly my point; I totally agree. But I suppose you could also argue that people said the same thing about dual core... :?

True, from a personal standpoint I have no need for more than what my computer does right now. Although keeping up with gaming is getting to be a sticking point.
