Default Intel Lowers Guidance as Market Share Plummets

Intel said that its Q1 revenue is expected to be between $8.7 billion and $9.1 billion, as compared to the previous expectation of between $9.1 billion and $9.7 billion primarily due to market share decrease and lower that projected demand. Historically, Intel’s revenue declined by 7.2% in the Q1 compared to the Q4, according to some analysts. However, the Q1 2005 earnings were $9.4 billion (down 2% sequentially), whereas the decline to aforementioned figures from the Q4 will mean approximately 11% to 15% decrease, much higher than the last year and not inline with historical reductions.

Okay guys.... I know how you feel......but contemplate this from a different perspective.

Competition.

If Intel wasn't around, or wasn't competitive..... why would AMD spend money developing better CPUs? truth is, they wouldn't. Case in point is the FX60...... it had been ready for awhile, but because INTEL had nothing to compete with the 4800+ X2 or the FX57, AMD was in no rush to release it.
Another way to look at this is pricing, without competition, a company can charge whatever they want..... and you'll pay it because you have no alternative.
So you want a good competitive balance, regardless of where you loyalties lie.

INTEL E8400 // Gigabyte EP45 Extreme // 4GB DDR3-1600 // Palit HD 4870 // Antec 1200 // Seagate 750GB HDD // Zalman CNPS9700 // BFG ES 800W PSU

Very true, though that's part of the reason AMD has developed such a following and have enthusiasts pulling for them. From a marketshare standpoint, AMD has a long ways to go to truly be considered competitive. As a result, we've historically seen Intel processors and motherboards carry a premium pricetag when compared to a general AMD equivalent. This has changed somewhat with the X2 processors and x16 mobos, but I still contend that at almost any given pricepoint, I can spec out a better bang/buck build using AMD silicon for a general purpose or all-around rig. If we start talking about specialized tasks (content creation, gaming benchmarks, etc), then this goes out the window.

As an aside, I will say that my view on bang/buck has changed in recent years. I'm not so concerned with saving $100 or so dollars on my system build as I am with getting lust worth performance. In that respect, I eagerly await what lies around the corner from both camps, be it big blue or the little green engine that could. :D

Most definately! I'm looking forward to both companies' next-gen products and platforms as well :)

And I don't think most of us were wishing Intel had zero market share, I think we were happy about the fact that competition was infact increasing. With AMD gaining more marketshare and Intel losing it, that is actually putting the processor manufacturers on more even ground, thus making them more competitive with each other. Those are very good points about the FX-60, I had not thought of that before. But I'm sure most of us are aware of the inherent problems associated with an uneven, unbalanced market.

"FX" is the flagship, top of the line, leader of the pack product line from AMD in the desktop microprocessor market. The "FX" processors usually have the most L2 cache and the highest clock speeds. As you can imagine, the best of the best from AMD are more than capable of most any task you put them up to be it gaming, audio/vido encoding/decoding, photo editing, file compression, multitasking, or just surfing the internet.
