Default IBM's new processor? 4.7ghz?

On NBC news today (The only news show I can remotely tolerate) said IBM is releasing a 4.7ghz processor.

However, I didn't believe a word they said besides IBM + new processor. They said that Intel's fastest processor was 1.6ghz, and they said the 4.7ghz processor would be able to download iTunes's entire library in about 1 minute (thus linking internet speed to processor speed).

Freaking Retards.....

But google backed them up.

Quote:
With 4.7GHz chips (4MB of L2 and 32MB of L3 cache), an IBM p570 server showed an average response time of .625 seconds when handling requests from 2,100 users. That compares to a p570 with 2.2GHz Power5+ chips that handled .983 requests per second for 2,000 users.
How come I haven't heard of this before?
Have u guys heard of this?

Is there another post already about it making me look like a complete nub?

Yes, about a year ago - and I heard it was not going to happen. I'm still suspicious, its a big jump for them. Last I heard they had hit a wall AND to top it off were having FAB issues with their current chips.

I think I'll google IBM

Manta

EDIT: and I'm still suspicious. As for 02/07 the best they had in P-series was:
Quote:
A 64-core IBM System p5 595 (2.3 GHz, 32 chips, 128 threads) with IBM DB2 9 is the best overall system (4,033,378 tpmC, $2.97/tpmC, configuration available 01/22/07), and tops all other vendors' systems.
How do you go from 2.3 to 4.7 in 3 months?

They have faster chips at IBM, but if you look close they are typically made by Intel. Interesting...

I see them getting into one hell of a difficult time selling these, ya know since there are already two warring factions of cpu manufacturers, a third may only add congestion. And is this 4.7ghz dual core or only single. if it's single, who really gives a whoop, if dual, who gives a whoop, it probably will cost a small child.

I'm thinking NBC fails the internet. I don't see IBM marketing these for home PCs either, these would be good for servers and such but just way to much for home PCs, and the architecture may not be any good for gaming anyways. This is all just speculation as usual, until we see the product who knows how it will turn out.

yep have to agree with ya there, these are definitely aimed at the server market, still it would be interesting to test against the whole home pc market. . .

Most likely a PowerPC based CPU. No use to most of us unless its AMD Socket Compatible and you like running PPC based linux distros. Pretty nice speed none the less

This is a server only number crunching proc, not a desktop proc like AMD or Intel

the cpu you guys refer to is IBM's server POWER6 cpu. Although i don't know if you can really call it a cpu (atleast not like a cpu made my AMD or INTEL). It is a dualcore cpu at 4.7ghz with 8mb of L2 cache. The only problem is, it is not x86.

However, don't even think about getting one of these as your desktop cpu, you'd be broke. (not to mention i don't think you can do very much with one of these.)

It IS a CPU. a PowerPC CPU, not x86. Like the CPU used in Macs before they went Intel. If you did get one, and a compatible motherboard, you could run a PPC version of Linux, or even windows NT4 on it.
