| Well my Core Duo computer is starting to be mean and I figured out what the cause was, the USB ports were somewhat shorted by overclocking and it still constantly freezes because of overclocking. So I have two choices of what to get, it has to support DDR2 667 RAM. I normally would just get a new motherboard. But the Socket is Socket 479 and the motherboard I'm currently using is $145. I'm not sure if my problem is just with the motherboard either, it could be CPU related and the CPU is around $200, which I could not afford to replace. I could go with This gigabyte motherboard for $81.13 and a 3800+ X2 for $131. The total for this route would be $212.13 and it would be virtually guaranteed to work. I'm also not totally against going Intel, but can't come up with a price with the core 2 duo that is within my budget (as close to $200 as it can get). Any ideas on what I should do? | I've never actually heard of a motherboards USB ports shorting due to an overclock, and in all honesty I don't think that is the problem. You HAVE undone the overclock, correct? And have you reset the CMOS? You could also try re-seating the CPU and dusting around. Also make sure its not software issue. Check the temps while your at it, and make sure the CPU is not overheating. Oh, and the mobo and CPU you listed to buy look good ![]() Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.80GHz Cooler Master GeminII - Thanks Rich and HL! | Modder-ator | No, I would advise against that motherboard if you plan to overclock. I have nearly the same board (GA-M61PM-S2) and it has very few options in the BIOS for overclocking and tweaking. You can't even get access to RAM timings or HTT frequency or voltages or anything without accessing the "hidden" options with ALT + F1 or something like that. But if you don't plan on overclocking or changing anything besides your CAS latency, then I think it would be a great board (mine has been solid as a rock). And if you want to go Core 2 Duo and can afford to wait a few months into 2007, Intel should be rolling out some price cuts and new, cheaper Core 2 Duo processor options (see this thread). | I don't plan on overclocking the CPU, I just want something that will be rock stable and that won't give me billions of problems. Thanks for the opinions.
