Default E8500 Wolfdale, 4.7Ghz on Air

For those who haven't seen it yet.
New 45nm CPU First Look-Intel C2D E8500 4.7G On Air Cooler - TweakTown Forums
The Wolfdales are the dual core Penryns, and are set to launch sometime in January at around $270 for this particular model, which is the high end at 3.1GHz, to the E8400 at 3GHz for $200 and the E8200 at 2.6GHz for around $170. All of them have a 6mb cache and 1333Mhz FSB.
From the look of things, all of the Wolfdales have this kind of headroom, and being on a 45nm Hi-K process you can get insane speeds with basic air cooling thanks to the low TDP and heat generation. The tester in the review there uses a common TT V1.
Keep in mind that it's still an Engineering Sample and knowing Intel cherry picked, but that kind of headroom is insane. Check out the SuperPi scores compared to the QX9650.
I know what I'm shooting for as an upgrade, sorry AMD...your death knells get louder and louder.

Actually, I am testing a QX9650 right now, and have it over 4GHz, without any tinkering or real effort (1.4V), 1M Super Pi for me was 12.110, 32M was 12.23.442....with some decent cooling, and a little more time i think scores on par with that are possible.

According to my UPS the QX9650 is about 198W load, as compared to the QX6850 at 279W....the difference is about 11 minutes of backup time......mind you those numbers are with the QX9650 @ 4GHz and the QX6850 3GHz......

As far as temps, I'm seeing 43/42/27/23C idle......which is completely caused by the cooling.

That is crazy..4Ghz with temps as low as that? Are you still using the GeminII, because thats not even the best air cooler out there. I seriously need to start saving for a massive upgrade.

Actually right now I'm using my Thermaltake Kandolf LCS case that I'm in the process of modifying. Its about on par with a good air cooled solution, but I'd consider it a poor to fair liquid cooling system.
