| is the E4600 a better processor than the a Pentium D 820? I'm thinking about changing the 820 for something better. not looking for anything too extravagant and the 4600 is on sale pretty cheap right now. how does it compare to my E6600? i know theyre both 2.4ghz core2's but the 4600 has a 2mb cache and is 800mhzfsb compared to my 6600 that has 4mb cache and is 1066mhz cache. its not really a big deal about the difference but i was just wondering | ||||||||||||||

| the E4600 would be a great improvement over the D820. it would probably be a tad slower than an E6600 on programs that use cache heavily, but shouldnt be too far behind. also you cant discount overclocking as a factor ![]() E8400 @ 4ghz (500x8 @ 1.35v) Gigabyte X38-DQ6 2x2GB G-Skill DDR2 1000 @ DDR2 1000 5-5-5-15 2.1v 2 Sapphire ATi Radeon HD3870 in Crossfire Seagate 7200.11 500GB 32MB Cache HDD Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Silverstone DA750 Samsung Dual Layer DVD Burner Lian Li G70WB Thermochill PA120.3|Swiftech Storm Rev.2|Swiftech MCP 655 | ||||||||||||||

| I always suggest a Core2 over a Pentium/Celeron anything. Just make sure the board can handle it. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. | ||||||||||||||

| As mentioned, the E4600 should be an improvement over your Pentium-D 820, but probably won't best the E6600. But the E6600 and E4600 should be pretty close in performance and you probably won't notice a difference outside of running benchmarks or directly comparing computing times for things (like file compression or video/audio encoding/decoding). | ||||||||||||||

| As already stated, going from a Pentium D 820 to a E4600 will see pretty big performance increases, but the E6600 is still a tiny bit faster, because of the larger cache. It should also run cooler than a Pentium D 820, so that's a nice plus.
