I'm sure AMD is having a tough time right about now. They just forked over all that cash for ATI and then Intel hits them with a totally new architecture that not only catches up with AMD, but leaves them behind. I sure hope AMD can recover from this, and soon.

The X2 6000 has already been available, but apparently not officially launched?
Either way, I'll always welcome price cuts! If those prices listed by the Inqurer are accurate, this is going to be pretty substantial.

AMD is known for pulling rabbits out of their hats. Remember they were the first ones to break the 1GHZ barrier with the T-bird. Then they kept the socket 7 alive for about 2 years too long with their XP procs, while Intel out shined them with the P4 2GHZ and above. Then WHAM 64 bit out of nowhere. It took awhile for Intel to catch up to AMD.

Not that it matters, but didn't Intel hit AMD with its new architecture first, and then AMD bought out ATi? The reason I ask this is because AMD bought ATi knowing that Intel was spanking them. And I doubt AMD and ATi would have merged unless AMD had something up their sleeves to combat Intel's new architecture when the money for buying ATi could have been spent on more R&D to combat Intel. I dunno. I think AMD is up to something, otherwise they wouldn't have sunk all that money into aquiring ATi.

AMD acquired ATI officially in July 2006. Intel released C2D in May of 2006. However, you can bet your last dollar that AMD and ATI were in talks way before the release of C2D and for AMD to pull out of those talks at that point due to the C2D's release would probably have cost AMD a lot of money.

I don't think AMD is going to fail due to the release of C2D, I think that if AMD fails, it will be due to their expenditures before, and right after, C2D's release.

AMD has a history of staying in the hunt no matter the dog, so I don't expect them to roll over anytime soon.

I agree with Garet, AMD is up to something. We probably won't know what until the end of this year.

Some have suspected that AMD won't continue to battle the Intel giant like it has traditionally done. Instead, they may try to diverge slightly and expand on the "HTPC" and small form factor PC markets with more powerful CPU+GPU combo chips and hope that that brings them out from under the thumb of Intel.

I'm sure that AMD has something planned that will yet again outperform Intel and make everyone buy new motherboards. lol

I sure hope the pricing drop also effects the Opteron line. I still want that AMD Opteron 185 Denmark 2.6GHz Socket 939 CPU to top off my system. Just can't find a good deal up north. Newegg = $330, Tigerdirect(US site) = $350, Tigerdirect(Canadian site) = $396!???. All prices given in US dollars.
