X-bit labs - Phenom CPU: Christmas Gift from AMD

Quote:
When AMD was briefing the media about Phenom at their launch event they mentioned that a fix was in the works for one of the hundreds of erratums that the Phenom processor has. All processors have glitches and they are documented and given a erratum number. As time goes on many of these get fixed with BIOS updates and whole new CPU steppings. This is normal and the way AMD and Intel have developed and updated processors for decades.
Legit Reviews - AMD Phenom TLB Patch Benchmarked and Explained

Quote:
We have been following the story of a chip-level problem in AMD's quad-core Opteron and Phenom processors all week. This bug—CPU makers prefer to call them errata—can cause system hangs in specific, rare circumstances. This sort of obscure problem is not really uncommon in microprocessors, but CPU makers are often able to fix them on the fly with little impact to the end user. This particular erratum is especially unfortunate because the fix for it involves sacrificing a substantial amount of performance.

I think If I had to make a quick summary of Phenom it would be:
Good, but not good enough. If you are a die hard AMD fanboy and have to have a quad core setup, Phenom is your only choice. Until AMD can ramp up speeds or lower prices, there is a better Core 2 alternative at nearly every pricepoint.
