Default AMD desktop CPU lineup revealed

Quote:
AMD is planning to launch two 45nm Phenom X4 CPUs (Deneb) in 2008 with core frequencies of between 2.5-2.8GHz and 2.4-2.7GHz, with both adopting 6MB L3 Cache and having a TDP rating of 95W, according to sources at motherboard makers.
AMD will announce the final order date for its 125W Phenom X4 9750 by the end of the second quarter and the CPU will be replaced by a 95W version, while the 95W Phenom X4 9850 will appear before January of 2009. The company is also planning to launch an updated version of its upcoming Phenom X4 9950 (schedule to launch in June) at the end of the fourth quarter.
In addition to the current triple-core CPUs, AMD will launch the Phenom X3 8550 with a core frequency of 2.2GHz in the third quarter (production beginning in the second quarter) and the company will launch more triple-core CPUs in the fourth quarter.

Judging by how things have been going, they'll probably be 2.4GHz and 2.5GHz parts and it will be nothing special. That's a pretty quick switch to 45nm though, 65nm quads didn't have a very long lifespan or a very large family at AMD!

its good and possibly bad that they are jumping so fast... will be nice to see how they compare performance-wise...

Thanks HL and Corsair!

HAHA, yeah. Really shows how much confidence AMD has in their own lineup!

AMD said even before 65nm, that they were not focusing on 65nm and were dumping their resources into 45nm. It was what it was...a step in products.

This is a parallel to the Pentium4 Preslers/Cedarmills. A step in practice, not product. And the same comments were said about them if you remember correctly. Conroe wasn't going to be a big deal because the vast majority went off what the Pentium was doing and how AMD was running so well...theoretically. Actually, same as the Penryn step in practice.

They're not jumping off a sinking ship. They're progressing as slated. They're just once again slow to the battlefield. The 8550 (far too close to Intel DC naming schemes) will hit at the time the Core architecture is prepping to retire. Even if it wins by a large margin, the hype machine of Nehalem and it's looming release will slow the desire for the AMD units.

Now, If it's priced PHENOMenally well, then it has a hold in a wide market at least. People building machines will be faced with a socket change either way, and no longer given a long path of upgrades really. If the 45nm Phenom X4's look good, don't have a board that does Penryn, and the entire Nehalem product package is high end and high priced...it'll be a very tough decision to stay with Intel other than just wanting a brand.
