32 versus 64bit in Linux

I have been doing some digging lately since the issues comes up as more and more people are starting to make new builds with 4GB (and in some cases more) memory. One thing that is always mentioned relating to windows: To see the full 4GB or more, you need a 64-bit OS (usually with a mention of Vista x64).
Any mention of Linux is usually followed by the same line of reasoning, saying 32-bit is limited to 4GB no matter what OS...

Time to state that by the usual limitations, that...

appreciating newer technology

For the past few weeks, my newer system has been down due to the IDE/SATA drive controller going out. It would not recognize any drive of any sort. In the meantime since I have no temporary usage LGA775 motherboard, I have been limited to my older AthlonXP system (SocketA XP3000+, 1GB DDR400, ATI 9600XT, 160GB PATA drive, A7N8X board).

I have been getting back into CS:S lately which still plays well on this aged system although I do miss the DX9 effects. Using the DX8.1 level, I still...

XP SP3 fails to impress

Microsoft has publicly released the beta version of XP SP3 RC1 (v3264, kb936929) which is a 336MB download available at Microsoft's website as a standalone download. They have also released the RC2 version for a limited time (v3311) as a registry patch that enables it through Windows Updates rather then a standalone download.

Installing it took ages, much much longer than it should have on both systems, it seems that there are certain windows files that are in use that it has to remember...
