9800GX2 - UGH!
Posted July 2nd, 2008 at 10:11 by polobunny
Start of rant:
Christ, I got a 9800GX2 today in the mail that I can't use for a few reasons.
The first is that it blocks my SATA ports on my motherboard.
Now, I know there's normal 90 degrees SATA cables and inverted 90 degrees ones available somewhere.
Second thing: The freaking 8pin PCI-e! The OCZ GameXStream 700W, while being a super power supply only has 2 6pin connectors. No 8pin.
So now I have to fish for a 6pin to 8pin adapter, which considering my luck, is probably out of stock everywhere.
To add insult to injury, I realized that I won't be able to use my eSATA bracket. I'll have to mod that or something, not too sure how so far. @_@

| | Upon further inspection of the 6 pin and 8 pin PCI-e I can see that the added 2 pins are grounds. They're there for a reason, 8 pin can supply usually more power. Now will this extra power be needed? Probably not, considering some companies (BFG, XFX) supply a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter with the card. I modded a wire that I can connect to the 8th pin (sensing pin) to trick the 9800GX2 in believing all pins are there. I just need to order some cables and hope they get there soon. |

| | Thanks screwbie, appreciate the help, but at $26 US once shipped I prefer my ghetto modded wire, courtesy of my brilliant and dangerous soldering iron. :P Still have to order those dang 90 degrees cables + find a solution for my external HDD. |
