I Give Up

I get this feeling every so often that technology moves so quickly there is no way I can keep up with it, so I just give up. New and improved products are released daily. Every time I buy a new video card, a better one is released the next week. I spend months researching my next CPU, MoBo and Memory, I finally have the extra cash to buy it, and as soon as I do something better is released. Then when I am buying computer parts or accessories there are so many to choose from it's mind boggling. Keeping up on the latest technology is a job in it's self. If I stop paying attention for one week I fall so far behind it makes me feel like a NO0B.

My current main computer is going on 2 years old now, and even though I would love to build a brand new one right now it's just not possible. Every time I get ready to start saving up for a new build I start thinking what I need it for, and realize that my current 2 year old system does everything I need it to do. There is not one game I play or program that I use that doesn't play well on my current computer. In fact there isn't a game or program I plan to buy in the next few months that won't work on my current computer. So why build a new one? Eventually I will be forced to, so until that day comes I will just hold onto what I have for now.

There was a time that I always had to have the best parts money could buy in my computer, and as my interests and life have gone in different directions the need to have the latest and greatest has faded. One day soon I will build a brand new computer and catch up on the few years I have missed. For now I will just be content with what I have and watch the current technology pass me by, because for now, I Give Up.

Hell yeah Joe. I know what you're saying brother. I'm in the same frame of mind as you. Get busy with work for a couple months and the whole damn horizon of the computer world has changed into something you barely recognize.

I look at it like this: if it works for you then use it. The wife is happy using her P4 1.8GHz Dell with RDRAM. I use my XP3000+ system for work (I work from home) and I use my main system for gaming. I gave up trying to keep up a few years ago, I just try to stay in the game the best I can.

I couldn't agree more on this one. I'm in the same boat at this point in time, only my current system DOESN'T do everything I'd like and/or need it to do. I'm trying to scrap the cash together to build a new system now, and as far as I'm concerned the bleeding edge is not the place I need to be, nor can afford to be. I always thrive on getting previous generation hardware for dirt cheap after the new stuff is released and in this case, the 'older' C2D chip I'm looking at will absolutely smoke my old computer without breaking a sweat. I gave up trying to have the latest and greatest a long time ago. Marraige, a house payment, and having a kid tends to have that effect though, I suppose.

Upgrading is a great way to stay current without spending a whole lot of money on a new build. This way you only buy what you need when you need it. Sometimes you don't need a whole new system, you might just need a new video card, CPU, or maybe some memory to get your ageing system up to speed. There are some parts in my computer that are 4+ years old, and are still going strong.

What really bothers me about computer parts is that they aren't built to last. It's like the manufacture knows that it will be obsolete in a year or two, so they use cheap parts to cut their cost. Then in a year or two when the part fails you are forced to buy a new one.

I hear ya all the way Hitman!!! Crap, my old s939 system still does pretty much all I need it to do.
Hell the main problem that I have with updating is the fact that I would have to get a motherboard, RAM, and chip :-(
Talk about a cost problem LOL.
I pretty much agree with all of the other comments on this, I don't need the bleeding edge, but it would be nice to step up some with newer equipment. But of course, I am pretty much in the same boat! Can't even afford to do any kind of upgrade LOL

Amen brotha'! I am also finding it increasingly difficult to stay up to date. It's bad enough that new products come out that make previous models practically obsolete (first PCI-Express, then DX10, then PCI-Epxress 2.0, then DX10.1, etc). Then add on top of that the price gouging of the online retailers. The 8800GT and HD 3870 video cards are all about $50 overpriced. But I suppose if people are buying them, then they can charge that much. But damnit, now that I am thinking about a video card upgrade, the cards either cannot be found or are way overpriced.

I'm liking your way of thinking more and more; just stick with what you have until it's dead/incompatibile, then upgrade. If your part will absolutely not work, then you have no choice but to choose from the current crop of hardware and you don't really have to think about upcoming products as you will be forced to buy something today anyway.

But this is really what makes us all computer enthusiasts. If we didn't get excited about new hardware, we couldn't call ourselves geeks. Regardless of how frustrating it can be, deep down, we still love it!
