| Where do you live, Russia? AFAIK no one in North America dictates prices. Taxes, yes, but prices? ![]() |

| Colonel Calamity | yes prices... there is a ongoing lawsuit locally with an owner of a large number of gas stations (Phillips Oil is the company) across the south eastern US for price gouging... he was recorded both on tape and video firing store managers who refused to use his price and not what the proper market price was... I can drive around and see which ones are his, they are always at least 5-10 cents more expensive than the rest. It was nice seeing it down to $3.89 last night... but when this accident takes hold of the gas prices it will be back up to $4/gal.. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | One guy commiting price gouging does not mean the government dictates prices! Sorry if that isn't how the original post was meant but that is how it reads. ![]() |

| Colonel Calamity | at no point did anyone say the government dictates prices... Joker said the "area" or region dictates prices.. which is why CA has their own fuel blend which causes the price to be about $1.00 per gal higher... and why the midwest with its cheap ethanol can have a mid-grade with ethanol be 10-20 cents cheaper per gallon than the low grade with no ethanol.... and why the same midgrade ethanol blend in Florida can be higher than the premium price... Joker stated the "area", I stated one company but there are situations like this all over both relating to companies and regions of custom blends... Agreed, not one person or entity in the US dictates prices but companies can adjust their pricing some and the region can dictate price fluctuations as well. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Area does NOT dictate prices, market does. Just because one region or state dictates that only certain fuel blends be sold doesn't mean every gas station in that area must charge a certain price. Last time I checked there were all sorts of price differences across gas stations here in NJ. To be sure the differences aren't huge but they are there. NJ has its own "diktats" - I'm not allowed to pump my own gas here because heaven forbid I'm somehow not "trained" to do it. That regional requirement certainly jacks up the price because the station must hire an attendant to run out and pump the gas whenever a customer pulls in. ![]() |

| Colonel Calamity | every gas station within city limits here is the same price.. same with other stations within city limits of other nearby towns... but those outside of city limits are usually within 2-3 cents... except the stations owned by the guy/company I mentioned above which are always at least 5 cents higher than the rest. There are 6 or 7 stations within city limits here (yeah I know small town, about 20,000)... all but one ALWAYS have the exact same prices. The one that doesn't is a Shell/BP owned by that guy/company. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |

| Colonel Calamity | NY and CA and Chicago have their own custom blends and super high state taxes which is why it is typically at least 50 cents more than the rest of the US... ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |
