You guys with DLP, dont get me wrong, I am in no way slamming the DLP. I considered the DLP when I first started looking at tv's. Best bang for the buck, best blacks, best whites, and a great picture and huge friggin tv's for not that much. The way my living room is set up though I need about all of the 178 degrees of viewing angle that the plasma affords. The way the furniture is set up there are some odd viewing angles. The only thing I disagree with is that the 1080p is the only thing you should buy.

Ok, without sounding too DUMB!! What should I look for in an HDTV? First off it has to fit in a cabinet that's 36 3/4 wide, so I'm guessing that leaves me with a 32in tv. The old crt one (RCA) we have is, I believe from the late 70's or early 80's. I'm trying to convince the wife we need a new one. I think she was the last person in town with a rotary phone!!! There's too many choices out there. 1080p, 720, etc. It won't be used for any game machines, just watching tv, and eventually, I'll hook up my Bose speakers to it.

May I recommend a Phillips or a Sony Bravia LCD. 32" is the size, so this will be relatively cheap.

A Phillips 32" LCD will run only $899 (on sale at Best Buy/coupon at Costco). Costco is probably your best bet... can't beat a lifetime warranty.

You can't find a 1080p LCD at that size anyways and 720p looks damn good too!

BTW, this LCD is amazingly 36.4" wide, so it'll fit snugly into your cabinet!

- Core 2 Quad Q6600
- DFI Infinity 975X
- 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800
- 500GB WD 7200.10 Caviar GP + 250GB Seagate 7200.9RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM
- ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB
- Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W
- Acer 19" P191W Monitor
- Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution
- Vista Ultimate x64

I agree with the LCD below 42". Stick with the big companies - panasonic, pioneer, sony, and samsung, toshiba, hitachi. There are alot of other 3rd tier flat screens out there that are suspect. (i.e. maxent, vizio, sceptre)
A good resource I found was HDGURU.com, I learned alot from this website alone.

I have seen that Phillips at BB, and it does look pretty good. Think I need to start working a bit harder convincing the wife. While Sony has always had good sets, they are always out of my price range.
Thanks for the input, and sorry if I hijacked the thread.

You could get just a HD monitor, and use a cable box to do the signal work. Those things are pretty cheap. And why wont she let you hang it on the wall? That was one of the selling point to my wife, she hates our entertainment center.
