YaY. It's always fun to read an essay (and write). Gotta say, boy'nblack--i like those guitars. Not as huge a fan of the SG (they always flop down when i let go of the neck while standing, maybe the one's I've played are weird?) but i like explorers and jacksons are always fun to rokk out on.

I have an Epiphone les paul:

A crappy (but awesomely painted) ESP ec-100: ( my girlfriend painted it , thus the signing on the bottom, see her @ deviantart ) sorry about size, but i thought necessary

and (no photo) a light blue charvel.. dunno the model. With trem. Get pics later :D.

High school band was one of the best experiences ever, as it taught me the joys of classical music, and how awesome woodwinds are. Clarinet and tenor sax. I also have a C melody sax from the 20's (my tenor is a 1945).

But back to guitar, I don't have good effects yet. I use the amp's overdrive mainly for distortion, with a little boss metalzone sometimes or a borrowed ibanez tube screamer (buying one soon). I have a boss: chorus ensemble, dd3 delay, and tuner as well that i use a lot.

I think what's been influencing me most lately is swedish/finnish metal...

AND MUSE. I love the guitar work in muse.

I want a piano so bad. Saving up now for a midi keyboard controller--though it's just not the same :( I need a new 4x12 cab too... ugh.

Music ain't easy (on the wallet)

Like that burger commercial, "I have these little hands". That SG fits me and I don't have to work it as hard. I still thumb-over, but the stature of the body allows me to toss it around and get it right. I played Gibson's like yours, and they're just big to me. I can strum and maybe get off some Skynard or Zeppelin...but it's work to me. That things a brick IMO, but not a slide against the famous build. Just not me. I like the SG and Dinkys...I find myself around better.

Now that I have you on the TF2, I can "share" my Guitar Rig handed down to me. Check it out...with Dweezil!

Thanks Satch (If you're watching)! I get emailed settings...and man, this thing opened up a guitar that fits me to sounds I couldn't (or didn't know how) before produce. Made Dire come alive, and I'll put them and Van Hagar back on youtube soon.

MMmmmm, woodwinds... I miss my old clarinet and bass clarinet. Fun instrument to play. I wish I had spent more time with the trumpet too.... although the clarinet was more fun still.

Here's a crappy picture of my 2 guitars.

Click the image to open in full size.

Not only is it blurry, but it's not quite accurate anymore... I swapped one of the pickups in my ibanez with a ghs crunchy rails pickup (nice cheap ~$35 pickup, alot nicer than the stock noname pickup that came with my ibanez [which is the very bottom end as far as ibanez's go, afaik] especially in the higher ranges).

It looks a little goofy, since it's the ivory pickup, but it sounds nicer, and it was fun to install (although it didn't as long as I had hoped, lol... the wiring in my ibanez is really nice and clean, alot nicer looking than in my epiphone).

I'm also debating putting some hotter, more metal oriented pickups in the epiphone, just becasue I seem to be playing metal style stuff (or at least, really crunchy rock) more than I am white stripes style blues rock and the like... and plus i just like the idea of some emg style pickups in that guitar... it'd look awesome.

Anyone have any opinions on pickups?

That is like asking what mouse or keyboard to use IMO. I think the layout is more important than the pickups themselves.

I like double humbuckers with a bridge single pickup. Floyd Rose is alright with me and put some more winds on the single bridge. Again, it's for my backup/rhythm role more than frontman/soloist. I'm not good at describing sound (My "crunch" isn't universal) as much as relating known guitarist sounds. I don't think my setup is specific but what I feel is a good sustain and reaction to stums...sound to me comes from effects. I can switch from Soundgarden to Dire using the same guitar, and it's reaction to playing methods are predictable. Moving to the Jackson with one humbucker and two singles differs slightly.

So that's the light I shed on my feable opinion of pickups being about input and not sound.

We knew that prior to your gimp avatar bud! Any other instruments? I think pianists have all the structure to open the horizons...I couldn't open up until basic piano lessons anyway. It just made better sense.

And what's your favorite to play? I don't like classical as my emotion is spent on string. I played trumpet better it seems where you may like the same passion on the ivories. Just from the list, and there's no classical trumpets that I know of (well, Holst is kinda classical). Just something bouncy or driving?

Gotta have a style that just clicks, right? I like blues, and luckily there's a lot of blues derivatives that I like.

I've been thinking about picking up a Base or guitar, I have thought about a Sax for a little bit, but it never really happened..... I'd love to learn drums but we don't have room for drums....
So if I do any other instrument (other than piano) then it will probably be Base or Guitar.

Well, I have just discovered that I greatly enjoy contemporary stuff, like Green Day's "Wake Me Up when September Ends" by Billie Joe, but other than that I like classical and jazz... rag time is another fun thing, like "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin, really fun stuff.
And yes, bouncy and/or driving songs are the ones I like the most, I like fast piece's too, loud and boomy with soft parts are also another one of my high's with piano.

Yep, I like a lot of styles though, (all mentioned above) so theres not just one that stands out above them all.

I'll get a video up soon.

I had drum, sax, lessons in the school days.Played guitar,5 string banjo, till a few years ago. When I was younger, the family got together on sundays and we all played tunes from Merle Haggard,John Denver,Cash etc...alot of country. It was pretty cool cause,my aunt played base and organ,I was on guitar,my mom on accordian and/or organ, one uncle on sax and the other on 4/5 string banjo. The cousins would grab a drum stick and a can or pot or anything you could beat on.It was a time I wish I could relive at times.

Here are some better pics of my guitars.

Here's my Epi Les Paul:

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/P1020513.jpg

And here's my Ibanez, with its weirdly out of place pickup that works quite nice.
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/P1020509.jpg

Also, this is what they plug into.

http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...7/P1020510.jpg

I don't really feel like shrinking the images right now, hence the direct links.

I do love messing with the guitars though... i spent almost 2 hours last week just changing strings and messing with the action on my les paul, taking it down as low as it would let me go.... and that combined with the new strings made it sound downright awesome compared to what it was like before I messed with it. (of course, it could have just been the old strings were way past the point where they should have been changed, but I like it either way.)
