theres two ways. they have whats called counter battery radar. it picks up the incoming rounds trajectory and maps it back to the point of origin. they then send the data back to our artillery crews who then send them some whoop ass of our own. takes about 30 seconds to a minute if all is working as it should.

the other method is calling in the apaches if theyre in the vicinity. thats a scary piece of equipment!

When I was there we came across mortar tubes out in the desert aimed at our FOB, that were frozen in ice with the round where it would drop in the tube once the ice melted. By the time that happens the insurgents are long gone.
