Default Re: Love my Gmail....but COME ON!

Back when Gmail first went live, I was lucky enough to get an invite. So I've been using this email addy for quite a few years. It was Hotmail prior to Gmail and I've never missed using any other web based email client. It's just that now that my email addy has been around for awhile, I'm getting a tremendous amount of junk mail for pills, sexual dysfunction and watches. I get the occasional piece of spam unrelated to those three things, but it's rare.

Each day I get at least 25 junk mail messages in my spam box. In the time it has taken me to write this post, I have gotten 3 more.

I love Gmail's flexibility, customization, spam filtering and organization options. There's no other web based email I would use. I'm just whining about all the spam I'm now getting. Rarely does Gmail let spam get through to my inbox. Maybe twice a month.

But more importantly, Gmail has never flagged a legitimate email as spam.

I would say the GMAIL spam filters are leaps and bounds ahead of both Outlook and Thunderbird spam filters.

whats nice about Thunderbird is you can add on some extensions to help handle the spam... or for those not wanting to use webmail, theres always Comodo Anti-spam which is a white list based setup.. very strict.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I kind of wish that GMAIL had remained invite only, but maybe give a person 10 new invites a month or something. I had never gotten any spam until it went public

You can give them your address as example+spam@gmail.com, and then simply add a filter for all mail coming to example+spam@gmail.com. This is also useful, not just for spam, but for keeping your inbox organized and automatically having messages put in certain folders. You can also enter as many periods as you like and it will still work. ex.am.ple@gmail.com would still reach you.
I've been using this since someone (you?) mentioned it here. It's awesome. Enables me to track spam and control it much better.
If I register at some site, I write down "polobunny+sitename@gmail.com"
If I ever get a message that looks suspicious and it has this site name in the receiver field I can flag it as spam AND I get to know this place sells your information. :P
The + one isn't accepted as a valid email in every form though.

In that case I simply craft an email with . between letters. Annoys me a bit, but it's not impossible to catch where the spam comes from.
