Finally, someone in the press touches on how awful Favre was this last week....

Quote:
The Roger Clemens Award for "Best story that was ignored by the national media"
The great Brett Favre completely collapsed in the Giants-Packers game, throwing multiple balls up for grabs, single-handedly killing his team, and then everyone gave him the kid gloves treatment afterward. Favre had an incredible season and exceeded everyone's expectations. It was a wonderful ride, but come on. Didn't Troy Aikman and Joe Buck have to discuss Favre's Level 5 stinkbomb during the telecast beyond just alluding to it a couple of times? What about Peter King, who didn't even mention Favre's grisly performance in his normally comprehensive MMQB column? With all the breaks Green Bay got in that game, if Favre had given his team even a C-plus, the Pack would have won. You know he was bad when the Giants planned on kicking off in OT even if they won the coin flip.
(Note: The media spent four months spoon-feeding us this urban legend that Favre wasn't a gunslinger anymore, he was managing games now, he wasn't going to kill his team by taking dumb chances -- I wrote about how dumb this story line was as far back as Week 4 -- when the reality was Favre was playing the same way he always did, only he was playing exceptionally well and had better teammates. Unfortunately, for Packers fans, that minus-4 weather ended up freezing his Fountain of Youth and he killed their Super Bowl hopes. In my opinion, Favre never changed the way he played this season. Not even one iota. He just played well until Week 19.
ESPN Page 2 - Simmons: Finally, some hardware for LT and Tiki

I mean, no one even remotely talked about how terrible he was....he threw several passes that could have been intercepted, including one pass 40-50yds that was clearly into triple coverage.....

he didn't do that great but its not this doom and gloom that everyone is making it out to be... the youngest team in the nfl was 1 step away from the SB... can't bitch about that... but also no use spouting off all this "Favre is done" bs that has been floating around for at least 5 years...

I think you are missing the point that that was an epically bad game.

Not only was that final INT just a stupidly thrown ball, but his first INT was thrown completely up for grabs, as were many of his passes......he singlehandedly is responsible for a Manning vs Patsies Super Bowl.......now suck it up, and deal with the fact that we are blaming you and your Packers for a crap Super Bowl.

I didn't think people were going to waste their time to watch it. I've better things to do than watch it... like licking the windows in my house or watching gay men duke it out on a UFC Fight Night Live rerun.

I didn't watch 1 full game this year. And as far as Farve is concerned he's never been great at making decisions but has plenty of natural ability that has overcome that. Super Bowl who cares it's all east coast and they can have it.

When the Packers are down, Brett takes chances; sometimes they pay off and sometimes they don't. When he succeeds, he's the "comeback kid"; when he doesn't, he's a "gun slinger" who makes "bad decisions". Either way, he's Brett.

I agree that it was a terrible game, but I'm not about to place much of the blame on Favre's shoulders. I do put much of the blame on coach Mike McCarthy. The play calling was bad (except for the first drive.) The team never had even two minutes of outdoor practice which left them totally unprepared for the evening's frigid weather. Even a Pittsburgh boy should know that playing inside with frozen footballs is not the same thing as freezing your butt off out in the cold. (Honestly, this was one of the most stupid things I've ever heard of!)

There was absolutely no running game and the few ground plays that were called had such poor blocking that Barry Sanders in his prime couldn't have punched through that line.

Plaxico Burress owned Al Harris all night, yet instead of giving Harris some help out there, McCarthy stuck to what "worked all year."

Although I was, and remain very disappointed, I need to remind myself that this, the youngest team in the NFL, was predicted to finish 8 and 8 this year. Not bad for a bunch of kids and an old gun slinger. Wait until next year!

Thank you Carl, I would have to agree 100%. People tend to forget that 1) the pack has gone from 4-12 to 8-8 to 14-4 in just 3 years and 2) is literally the youngest team in the NFL in terms of rookies and 2nd/3rd year players. To make it one step below the SB with those odds means that someone is doing something right and I really do believe it is Favre's teaching and keeping the game alive. It certainly isn't Mccarthy and his crap play calling. Their average to best games of the season, you saw Brett calling audibles at least half of all plays and they did very well.
The games where he did what Mccarthy wanted, well we saw how that worked against NY and Chicago.
