| Colonel Calamity | There may be other server OS's but none can run those programs fast, well or securely. Why else would they use Linux. The only real reason I use windows myself is for a few games. I am working on getting full GPU acceleration from my X1950GT which has little linux support at this moment. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! | Colonel Calamity | says nothing at all, my specific single choice of card is not officially supported yet. Most other major ATI cards ARE supported from the 8500 to the latest HD2900's. Many times drivers for a particular item that needs them are written for linux first since it is small and easy to do and then they work on Win drivers afterwards. ATI drivers on linux are one of the few that are released after the fact, not before. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. | Functional Alcoholic | By what a M$ OS? Doubtful. Most of those systems were put in place long before Windows was anything but a buggy desktop OS based on DOS. Keep in mind that Unix has been around for quite a bit longer then windows. Unix has always been the main server OS. M$ is new to the Server network world. Windows NT was their first server OS back in the mid 90's. Unix has been around since the late 60's early 70's. It's not going anywhere. For that matter Linux isn't going anywhere either. Yeah it's probably not the best OS for the common home user, but it has it's place in the world. Mostly in systems that require low resources, high security, and minimal downtime due to being mission critical. |

| Just giving you a bad time. Actually I never had a driver problem with my 9800 or 1600 on linux. But linux just isn't there yet for a desktop OS. At least for the majority. Kind of funny to see the linux community always pushing their OS but people still are not going to it and I don't see game developers moving to it either, in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see developers leave computers all together and that would be a boon for linux. |
