I don't think it is lazyness.... I think it is the amount of work needed would run the course of this event or longer to get in properly...
Linux is not bullet proof, but compared to the alternative, it may as well be.

Bullet proof and may as well be are a long ways apart. It's just not worth the effort right now and probably never will be since the linux community really doesn't want all those Windows and OSX users anyway. Gives them that uber feeling.

unless you have actually tried using it and hacking into it, you would not understand... There is this err of arrogance where people see that MS and OSX is insecure so they think Linux is too when that is just not the case. when you are comparing thousands of vulnerabilities with Windows AND OSX with less than a dozen with Linux, that is a very big difference.

and directly from the story:

Quote:
Although several attendees tried to crack the Linux box, nobody could pull it off, said Terri Forslof, a manager of security response with TippingPoint. "I was surprised that it didn't go," she said.
Some of the show's 400 attendees had found bugs in the Linux operating system, she said, but many of them didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest.
they may have found bugs but it takes way too much time and effort to actually get access as needed to do anything with it, much longer than the event would run.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

You can do pretty much everything you can do in every other OS in Linux, with the exception of games. There are some specialty apps that aren’t available in Linux, but nothing the average user can't do without. I am of the opinion that if there was more support for games in Linux that you would see quite a few more of the enthusiast users switch over to Linux. Honestly that’s the only thing that keeps me from switching over to Linux completely. For the past couple of months the only time I boot into Linux is when I want to play COD4.

Linux like every other OS is coded by humans therefore it is subject to human errors that can be exploited. However unlike Windows and even OSX Linux uses higher security and stronger user permissions at the base of the OS. Most of the security vulnerabilities in Linux are linked to other applications that are ether bundled with or installed into the Linux distro itself, and really not related to the actual OS.

Installing Apps in most Linux Distros is even easier then in Windows. Not only that but you have more control over what is installed and you don't get all the bloatware that’s Windows apps are famous for.

If you don't use the installer in the distro, like Yast for example, then yes it can be a pain. But if you use the installer it couldn't be any easier. It downloads and installs for you in one step and you never have to reboot. It doesn't get any easier then that.

We were Linux fanboys, so we didn't want to find an exploit in our precious OS.
