i'd also be willing to bet most of the people that DO know it, think it was invented there ; )

invented in NY by a smaller iriqous tribe
then used as a game to prepare for war with their own tribe, then it BECAME war with other tribes
the fields would be up to 10 miles long, go on for months, and would be played, (fought) till the other tribe was dead

they used it to settle scores, who owned what land, and all sorts of stuff

it's also called lacrosse because the french people who saw the indians play it saw the crosses in their sticks and called it 'the cross'
