well the dry air does it, but the apts in NY have this long shaft of garbage bine that smells like dead people, (literally like menthol odor the its exactlly a smell of preseved body my anatomy class) so this might be one of the reason of preventing the rotting smell to be noticed, and a good apt in NY have sound proof wall and doors which mean less air cirulcation contributing to your what so called CUrry smell...
