| I can't stand double height It looks retarded that way (at least IMHO). I can't wait to get Linux running again :)But once again, what point is a desktop switcher if it doesn't change your taskbar icons? |

| I'm Diggin it! | IF the day ever arrives that sees any distro of Linux being even in 1/4 of the homes in America, Linux will then have it's share of problems just like Windows products do. The thing is, Linux Distro's are made for those people who are into playing with their OS. Even the easiest to work with distro of Linux (PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, OpenSUSE etc...) still have a high learning curve for the uninitiated. Windows is written so that Grandma can turn her computer on and send cute little pictures of puppy and kitty and receive cute little pictures of the grand kids. Linux, IMHO, will never enjoy the notoriety of Windows. Nor the profitability and user base. Why this conversation has to keep happening, I don't know. But I see it in every single forum I visit. And inevitably, it all boils down to this. Linux: I like my FREE OS! Windows: I like my ease of use and GAMES! *yawn* ![]() Q6600@ 3.2GHz w/ CNPS9700 | EVGA 780i | 2Gb Corsair DDR2-800 | EVGA GTX 280 1Gb Video | 1x WD 640Gb HDD, 2x Seagate 400Gb HDD, 1x250Gb WD | 2x Samsung SH-203B Opticals | Antec 900 | ABS/Tagan BZ700 700W PSU |

| I agree with you for the most part. Linux will probably never be a mainstream OS. It has its share of problems just like every other OS (even more so for people who aren't PC gurus), but I think its security in the mainstream world has been demonstrated by Apple. They're both based on the Unix concepts and Apple's users have been enjoying a virus-free system as long as they've been around. The fact is that with a filesystem hierarchy, the only way for a virus to spread is if every person that downloads the virus willingly allows it to do damage. That's mostly how it is for ad/spyware on Windows, but viruses and worms are far trickier when executables are given permission to do anything they want. So I guess you could say that I'm not really an advocate for any one particular OS; I'm just for pushing filesystem hierarchies. Now, the problem is, the proprietary world (especially Windows since it dominates the market) is stricken with politics. The anti-virus companies would follow suit on Microsoft if they created a virus-free operating system. It's 100% possible for them to do, and they've talked about it, but the anti-malware companies threatened to sue them. |

| I'm Diggin it! | Not too sure about virus-free for Apple users. Seems like I recall a time or two of them getting a virus. And don't get me started on how the "Most Stable OS in the World" isn't quite so stable.
