Are we working with a 7.1 surround sound HT or something else, Crunch?

Can you post a picture of your HT room without standing on the stairs please? It's hard to get a perspective of what I am looking at with the artificial elevation. You might have to take two pictures side by side, then use Photoshop to merge them together, if that helps. I want to help you, but it's difficult to really get an idea as to the area of your room.

Assuming that the speakers that I see mounted on your wall are your surround sound speakers, they should be positioned in line with your black chair. That is to say, you should be able to draw a straight line from the rear speaker on the left wall, to your easy chair, then to the other speaker on the right wall. The speakers should be 180 degrees in relation to the black chair, no more than 1-3 feet higher than the person sitting in the chair. If you are having issues with the surrounds drowning out the front speakers, you will most likely solve the problem by moving your front speakers away from the TV and no more than 1 foot away from the wall.

If the speakers that I see on your wall are your back speakers, not your side speakers, position the speakers so that they are 45 degrees from behind each corner of the black chair, and about 4-5 feet behind. The reason you are getting so much drowning out is because your wall speakers are simply too close to your ears, and your front speakers are so far away that your ears hear the side speakers first, then the front. All your speakers should be the same exact distance from the black chair, ideally, except for the surround speakers which should be half the distance that the front speakers are to your black chair.

I'm rather limited on options........this is about as good as it's going to get.
As you can see those are two of my Logitech Z5500 speakers I'm using for my rear (back) surrounds...

Crunch, so we are basically looking at a 5.1 HT setup. In that case, you need to position the speakers on the wall behind the black and blue chair at a 45 degree. I would seriously consider two speaker stands to sit your rear surrounds on, and not mount them on the wall at all.

I've included a pic to help you out.

The green boxes indicate where I would mount your surround sound speakers on the wall. The purple boxes indicate where I would place your speaker stands and set your surround sound speakers on top of.

The yellow circle represents where the 'sweet spot' should be. Unfortunately, the way the room is set up (long and narrow, it would appear) you are not able to rearrange the furniture so that the surround speakers in the back will fully be able to give you true surround sound. However, I would reccomend sliding the chairs closer to the TV and giving a bit more breathing room for the rear speakers to do their job.

I beleive that if you set your speakers up, (either mounted on a stand or on the wall as depicted in my picture) at a 45 degree angle and sit in a chair at the center of the room, you will hear a world of difference.

Ideally, the yellow circle represents the center of the room width-wise, and thus the center of the rear speaker sound projection. You would place your black chair in that circle, about 5-6 feet away from the rear surrounds, and the black chair appropriately distanced from your TV and front speakers.

Here are some pictures of my HT. Dont laugh at the front speakers I am in the process of making some stands. The little shelves are temporary. Also the house is kind of a mess.
