It was never meant to be a day of mourning. Originally the celebration was called Decoration Day, the day when the graves of the fallen soldiers were decorated with flowers and the flag raised in honor of those whose bodies were buried below.

It was certainly meant to be a sombre occasion, since in honoring them we recognize them for making the ultimate sacrifice, and it certainly was never intended to be the three-day holiday it has become.

Realizing that many (most?) Americans no longer observe Memorial Day as a day of remembrance, President Clinton asked that all Americans observe a "National Moment of Remembrance" at 3 pm each Memorial Day.

Memorial Day becomes a holiday which becomes a holiday with a just "moment" of remembrance. My, oh my.

Hope all had a happy and safe Memorial Day. Drew hope you had fun but didn't really sink your boat.

Went to the local parade and got all choked up when all those vets passed by - some still walking, some too old and so riding on small floats. Realizing how blessed I was to live in a country where others willingly went out to fight for our rights - lease we can do is give them some of our thoughts/prayers one day a year.
