Nice timing! I just jumped into DSLR territory about two weeks ago. Take your time, do plenty of research.

As a related FYI, I ended up getting the Olympus E-510 with two lens kit. There are several entry level DSLRs to choose from, but the feature-set (particularly image stabilization) sold me on it.

Some candidates worth researching, in no particular order:

Olympus E-510
Nikon D40x
Canon XTi (or upcoming XSi)
Sony A100 (or upcoming A200)
Pentax K10D
Samsung GX10 (same as above Pentax)

EDIT: Put Beach Camera on your list of potential vendors, too. They're one of the good guys, and if you end up going with the D40, they're selling it for $499 shipped with a 2GB memory card thrown in (LINK).

C'mon Paul, post a few of those pictures I saw. You posted a few pics you took with that new camera and they were nothing short of excellent! The camera was also very well priced for the high quality it was capable of. Not too mention starting with a 2 lens kit!
