| Here's an article on the M&P 15 from Shootingtimes.com that has a couple good pictures of it. The S&W site wouldn't load properly for me here at work. | I'm Diggin it! | Haven't fired the S&W. The M16/Car15/M4 have all had their fair share of troubles. In sandy environs, the oil needed for lubrication quickly picks up a lot of the dust. This in turn becomes a gooey substance once mixed with the carbon deposits from the rounds. It's not long before it's jammed up. If you keep the weapon exceptionally clean, you can go through 20+ mags before having the first jam. Introduce blowing sand and dirt, and that number can be as low as 2 although I've had at least 6 go through before getting my first misfeed. Performing SPORTS clears the jam quickly though. Once you have your first jam due to dirt/carbon, you're about 10 mags away from a complete cleaning. The hotter it is, the quicker this can happen. So the M4's really have some issues with gumming up and cooking off. After an extended firing session, you get in the habit of either emptying the mag or dropping it before moving your barrel away from the target area. Of course, if you're jammed up with a live one, or unknown round in the chamber, you better keep that sucker pointed away from any of the good guys. Thing is, the MP5 is still my favorite weapon. But is sucks beyond 150 yards and is pretty difficult to be accurate with beyond 50 yards when under pressure/on the move. But that damned thing would fire even choked up with mud. The AK is the same dependability wise. The M16 and variants just don't hold up as well. A brand new one will do very good for the first few thousand rounds, but you start having issues not too long after that. | A Lonely Geek | The MP5 is the most awesome weapon that I've had in my hands. I was extremely fortunate to get to put a few thousand rounds through them at a shooting class I attended. At Unkie Sam's expense of course. It kind of sucked though, without a speed loader...the magazines shredded my fingers loading one round at a time. The nicest "assault weapon" I have used is an HK 91, if you can stand the weight. I preferred the 91 to the 93, though I'd hate to carry it plus a combat load. The FN/FAL is also awesome, but it's even heavier. I think that you could troll with either through a sandy creek and they'd still shoot. I'd hate to know what any of them cost nowadays, though. | The H&K 416 blows the H&K MP5 out of the water, as well as the M16 variants as far as military issued weapons go. The M&P15 from S&W can't really be compared to the military variants since it is so much better made and of course will more than likely never be issued in any significant amounts. | I used to a long while back Ron. Me and my DS partner shared the expense, and kept all of the equipment at his house since I lived in the barracks. Haven't done any reloading in a while, but still have some Lee and RCBS dies packed up somewhere. | Hubba,Hubba......Hubba | YES...to the point that I have told ,and showed, my local fire company, exactly what room in the house(which is a basement room) , and window,....the room to "hit" first, with foam. They have seen what I have and totally agree.....if my house catches fire....do NOT ENTER! .....unless you have that room dealt with, first. It was my decision/responsibility,as a gun owner/reloader,to let them know of my standing,as far as it goes, with "black powder". I have way above average, what "normal" people usually have in the household. I love a "gun"/ "weapon" thread and Will post some pics as soon as I can. I have been working 10/12 hours a day so being here is kinda tough at this time through the week....but look out on the week end! Thanks a bunch for starting a thread,I can realy relate too, militarily and actual hunter wise. ![]() EDIT: as far as basic training and the issued firearm...IMO, the M16A1 was the THEEE firearm to protect my ass without fail. I quallified with it,slept with it and loved it.Very reliable...even in the harshest environment. They were made by COLT. I also used the varient, the AR14. My dad used the M1....which he still swares by. All Rock Chucker equipment. RCBS all the way. Last edited by oldman_gamer; April 17th, 2008 at 19:16. |

| Dread ... One of my custom AR's is a bit like that S&W except I have a custom 18" heavy match barrel with a full handguard and a Socom Solid Aluminum collapsible butstock with a Russian made heads up red dot display ... far superior to the best made ones here in the USA. It also has a GG&G flip up front and rear sites. Fits in a small bag that looks like a short keyboard bag.
