These are not minor things. Such updates that cause new socket configurations ruin the system lifetime potential and the ability to upgrade without buying a new motherboard and RAM. What do you expect to be major? A whole new full architecture? Don't expect this anytime soon. Any "major" changes would have made these conditions worse. They've already gone overboard with the socket config changes.

My comparison was not pointing to the Intel vs AMD server market, merely the fact that they're actually trying to have a server market at all these days.

Not that AMD really names it's microarchitectures with K(x) anymore, but the Barcelona has frequently been nicknamed a K8L

It takes a comparison to argue a claim ;)
Even if you want to say that the K8 has "stayed the same," it's a lot more compared to what the K7 went through.

Lets compare it to the K7 Series...

1. K7 Socket configs - 2 ... K8 socket configs - uh, at least 4 or 5 (if you go through Optys)

2. max number of cores from 1 per CPU to available 4 per CPU.

3. They've finally started pushing their server line a little. Dual opty systems are a lot more popular than dual MPs ever were. That, and while I know they exist somewhere - I've never even seen a pic of a Quad MP socket A motherboard.
i was speaking architecturally. the K8 core has remained relatively unchanged since its intro in 2003. only things done to it were a dual channel memory controller (socket 939) and eventually a DDR2 dual channel memory controller (am2) other than that the core architecture hasnt been touched, I.E performance stayed about the same. take a s939 3200 and run it with single channel memory and then compare it to a 754 3000. both have the same core speed of 2ghz and 512KB L2. im willing to bet the performance would be comparable.

AMD got too cozy with the performance of K8 to start advancing the technology hence why they used it until they ran it into the ground. the point im trying to make is they should have not rested on their laurels and should have started design on K10 sooner allowing them to push it out earlier
