That's what I was thinking more in line with. Love him or hate him, he did just that path clearing for other edgy material to appear more easily. Think All in the Family could have aired without Carlin?

Lenny Bruce really led the way but Carlin carried on where he left off and refined it.

Red Foxx was another classic. I remember a skit he did about Thanksgiving that was hysterical. Purely adult humor and purely Redd Foxx.
