Electrolysis device. The transformer is out of a microwave oven, I cut the secondary coil off, and rewound it with some wire, so it it outputs ~8 volts with 100 peak amps, but the coil of wire will not supply even 30 amps for any reasonable amount of time without melting.

I'm Going to be doing experiments with hydrogen and burning it in gas engines, and explode some things on the side

Basically its an a transformer I got from a dead microwave, with a bunch of heatsinks on it to keep it cool, which from there go to a 25 amp rectifier, then two the heatsinks in the bottle, which will be filled with water. So far, I can make enough hydrogen to sustain a small flame, but I have to limit the current to around 2-3 amps, because I have no cooling for the rectifier.

Nice setup. Nice job with the transformer and I noticed the meter was setup for DC Current. I just couldn't figure out what the hell you were doing. Need anything?

Not really, but if you know anyplace where I can get good quality magnet wire, so I can get a few more turns in of heavier gauge wire for the secondary.

One more thing is cooling, with the 3 heatsinks and fans I have right now on it, it keeps the temperatures okay, but I don't think they will hold up if I start to put a higher load on it. I was thinking of just submerging the whole thing in oil, but I'm not sure which type of oil to use, that won't eat away at the insulation.

@screwball, if you short the outputs with a piece of metal, the transformer can often get it glowing nearly white hot :-P

What gauge magnet wire? All I have is a mile of maybe AWG 16 and I am thinking you may need a bigger gauge like 12? Anyway if you can use 16 I have a bunch you are welcome to.

If you go the oil bath route, just about any good pure mineral oil will work. Drugstore is a good choice other than chemical supply houses. The bitch with using electricity to generate hydrogen is the damn current you need and then the heat.

Really like the setup again.

Ron

16 guage should be good for around 10-12 amps or so, correct?

For a transformer, at that current, a little iffy but if you want some to messs with just PM me an address and I will send a bunch.

If you go with AWG 14 you are looking at about $50 for a 1 Lb spool which should be only about 80 feet. Damn price of copper anymore.
