The 510 being a single shot and the 511 using a small 5 shot magazine. Rifles like this can be had in the $50 to $75 price range at gun shows and are excellent all around target rifles.

Though a prarie dog can be patient, I don't know of any who hang around waiting for you to shoot again if the first round misses. I got a 10-22 laying around here somewhere with some 20 and 30 round magazines but for the pure enjoyment I will take either of those old Remington .22 anytime. Those or a nice sweet little pump (slide action) rifle.

I don't disagree at all about your "FAV's", have you seen the prices lately on the pumps? They go for around $350 here! Me and my boys really enjoy our Rugers. I was a little hesitant at first because of the price but they have paid for themselves ten fold over the last few years. I am getting my oldest a new one for Christmas.

When you have a target rich environment there are hundreds of Ground Squirrels all over ... you actually need several rifles ... as the barrels overheat and you need to switch off.

What I think is a real kick is using a bolt action like the JW-15 and using subsonic ammo ... especially when there are only a few varmints to pop ... the shot is far quieter than a pellet gun and at 40 yards and under [which is most of your shooting anyways] It is a real blast ... typically it doesn't scare any game away.

Gave my son one this year ... [he is 14] ... he got a super nice stainless Ruger 10-22. I had it waiting for him for 4 years ... only one I had ever seen that has the original stock but the wood was solid tiger stripe wood.

He absolutely had a blast with it.

In addition for my fondness for the older .22s, the Ruger 10-22 is one of the best little .22s out there. The wife and myself owned a gun shop for a number of years (in addition to our real jobs ) and sold countless 10-22s. Beyond the basic rifle in several flavors there are countless little add on tricks for the rifle. Nice variety of stocks as well as heavy bbls (you can easily change the bbl).

Yeah, beyond a fettish for computers I am a gun nut. Someone mentioned in the beginning (Tech Geek I think) that any serious gun collector will have a stash of .22s he/she is fond of. Seldom is a trip to the range complete without a .22 rifle going along or a .22 revolver or pistol making the trip. The .22 is just plain fun to shoot and about as inexpensive as can be as to ammo.

My real passion is in high power rifle shooting as in competion. My nitch in the gun shop was custom work on the great old M1 Garand and the M1A (Civilian version of the M14) which I still have a countless stash of parts for. I loved to do glass bedding and overall accurizing of these rifles. I also worked on the mouse guns (AR15 rifles) but lean towards the M1 and M1A family. Sweetest version of an M1 Garand I built was chambered in the 7-08 Remington cartridge. Still have that one. I have always liked accurizing and building on Remington actions too.

I also hand load extensively as any real gun nut does. Not for economy but for accuracy. No shortage of components here. LOL

Nice thing about guns is the rifle I may invest $1,000 or more in today will be worth that tomorrow and several years from now. Damn, I wish I could say that about a $1,500 computer I build today.

Apparently this place has a few firearms (gun nuts) and maybe a good gun thread would be in order? I don't get out as often as I once did but still love shooting. Yeah, maybe a gun thread...?

Ron

I don't mind if this thread turns into it. Not a lot of paintballers or airsofters on the forums anyways ^^.

I played paintball some years back and still have some scars to show for it. It is good as long as you limit yourself, not go out and buy gun after gun and not going out every few days, try to limit yourself to a gun you like and going out for a few hours on the weekend or every other weekend. It does get expensive quick. How I managed to stay playing, having fun and not go broke was getting a PGP 8 shot pistol type. Let everyone else waste their money blasting away 20 shots a minute, and when you hear them reloading, sneak up and blast them one shot with the pistol. I got so good that there was only one guy who could beat me and he was a Ranger with all sorts of marksman awards. Get us both the full guns and it would be close but if I had that pistol he got me every time. If he had the pistol I would get him every time.
There were a few times when our group would go against these "pro" paintball teams and slaughter them, they always laughed when they saw me with a pistol. I would just smile and say theres 8 paintballs in here and 5 of you, I'll have leftovers. These guys would have belts holding hundreds of paintballs for refills and some would blast through 500-1000 per few hours, when they saw someone they just set it to semi auto and blasted away literally just painting a tree or rock or anything else close by. I guess they tend to win more matches because if the enemy is covered in paint but not hit, the ref would many times call that person dead since they can't tell for sure. When we went against them, we just slaughtered them. I was usually the one well hidden with a clean shot down into the opening so I would only need 1 shot per person. Got to the point after a few matches that they would all team up to go after me first for some reason and we used that to our advantage, I would hide same place several times in a row so anytime they get close another one of my guys nailed them.

We did have a lot of fun and almost joined leagues and stuff but the entry fees and amount of paint needed is just brutal so we just did it for fun.

Thanks HL and Corsair!
