| most people feel they are adults when they 19. I know I've been there. only after some long years you realize how infantile you were at that age and how ignorant of life. a mayor's position is very important and vital for any city or town. its not a game or being a scout leader (I was a scout leader when I was 15 so I know what that is). this news is so stupid, I think I only saw one that was worse than that: a law in georgia prohibiting oral sex (under the sodomy laws made in the 17 hundreds) under the penalty of up to 25 years in prison... (I think most people in europe including me would get thousands of years for that alone )I understand those of you who are about this age (19) think this is fine because you feel grown up but trust me: 20 years from now, looking back you WILL know how much of a kid you were at that age... Besides, I am one to think that with youth also comes fresh ideas. Quite tired of seeing all these old men recycling the same crappy ideas over and over, living the high life and smart talking out of sticky situations instead of bringing AND applying solutions to important problems. | |

| Colonel Calamity | there wasa mayor of a small local town of about 10,000 that had a Mayor that was my age (30) and he held onto the post for quite a few years and did quite well... in the end he ended up another money hungry politician, bend over for the almighty dollar and turned the beaches into something more similar to Miami Beach than the small northwest Florida sleep fishing village it still really is. Without increasing the infrastructure, you have untold tens of thousands of tourists and almost nowhere to eat or really even drive as the roads are so cramped during the summer. Granted this does not tell of this kid that was elected on OK but it puts the age thing into a bit of perspective. ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! On topic the problem with a 19 year old mayor I see is lack of experience. I don't just mean lacking a business or law degree. I mean a 19 year old generally lacks the wisdom of having been around awhile. Ron | |

| Functional Alcoholic | Huge difference between 19 and 30, as far as life experience, maturity, and decision making skills goes. Thats like justifying an 8 yo can be mayor because a 19 yo did a good job with it. |

| T-Rex | That's like justifying every 30 years old will do better than a 19 years old simply because they've been farting for longer. |

| F Ucn rd dis U mst uzUNIX | This is about the Mayor of Muskogee, not Los Angeles right? The mayor is the head of a group, or pretty much a cabinet. Eight others in this case. The city council does most of the large decisions and the motions get voted upon. The mayor has no special powers and is an equal of the council. I have classmates that have been in the council for about 7 years...making that about the age of 23 and 25 upon taking the positions. They had no experience leading a city, as it's not needed. A business wants to move in and that's about the biggest thing that happens. You talk about it's impact and what kind of deals to make with it. Here's a link to common discussions held in small towns like Muskogee. Most of it is enforcing ordinances and telling people to mow their yards. I think the position of Mayor is over mined. He/she doesn't have to have a legal degree or understand any of that mumbo jumbo, because the city holds law firms to sort through that mess. They don't plan much, but bring in concerns of the city. If something needs designed, that's left to engineers. They don't make decisions, yet lead the meetings. It's something a 19yo can do very well. And that is funny as hell Polobunny! I just took a break with some homework having to do with Fact and Opinion, and what it is. Ironically, this is what we have here on the table. There's no fact that the 19yo can't do it, we'll all just have to wait and see. It is almost a given fact that he's physically able to open and close meetings. If he can not make one single wise decision in term, there's 8 others as a check and balance. Being 19 doesn't make the kid ignorant to the people's needs. If he thinks the economy should be pumped, then bring it up and talk about possible causes and solutions. Last edited by Boy'nBlack; May 14th, 2008 at 18:09. |
