Well, I had to get a sound card to get sound. I got the X-Fi Xtreme Audio, and I have had sound and 5 BSODs since. I'm just gonna save up for a custom build and use the sound card in it, and toss this 3-year old problem machine out!

I would venture to guess its not your machine but the sound card. Creative is not know to have the most stable drivers and thus could be the cause of your BSOD's.

It all depends on the situation, I have been using Creative cards for years without a single issue, including recently my X-fi with XP Pro (32 and 64bit), Vista 32 and 64-bit. Well there was a small issue of no sound when I tried to use an older Ubuntu build with a 2.4.X kernel but using Fedora Core 7 and 8 it worked fine without the Creative extras....

Thanks HL and Corsair!

The only one that has a name to it is TRAP_CAUSE_UNKNOWN and it will show up at anytime (but it's favorite time to strike is when I'm dialing up for some strange reason). Due to BSODs, I cannot be online via dial-up and play music or watch a DVD via AVS DVD Player .

At this rate, I may just go buy a different brand and uninstall this one. The latest MaxPC magazine had two good cards listed. Will have to try one of them out.

The simple preventative fix to this problem:

Don't open links from people you do not know. Why exactly did you click on the link when it was sent from a random person?

Also, don't open a link that you don't know exactly what it is - "thinking" you know isn't good enough.

As Hitman said, Safe Computing FTW! Don't depend on your OS to protect you, protect yourself. It's easy.

Angry Re: Watch out for this IM + website attack!

Update: I got an email from Creative. The first suggestion was a download that wasn't there.

The second solution sort of worked. It removed the BSODs without names, but left DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL_TO and TRAP_CAUSE_UNKNOWN BSODs to haunt this PC. I can't even have Messenger signed in anymore, because if I get a notification, I get a BSOD!

Replied to Creative's email, attaching a System Report that they asked me to make with a program that came with the sound card.

Definitely time to for a new PC.
