Default Re: Routers??

I've had problem with many SOHO Linksys (WRT54G and the likes) routers constantly crapping on us at work. We replaced the last one by a cheapo Encore and so far it's holding...
The D-Link DI-624 I have at home is one of the worst routers I ever got. Worse out of the box experience ever. HOWEVER, after hunting down for firmware upgrades (and I do mean hunting down, as I had to find the latest betas on korean D-Link sites) this thing is rock solid.
I've had very good experience with Linksys RV042, an "office grade" router who doesn't sport any wireless but does load balancing like a champ. A tad expensive though. :P

Edit OH, the Linksys WRT650N gets an horonable mention, i've set one lately for a client and wireless works though 2 floors and ceilings which is pretty great.

The DIR-655 has features that you usually only find in professional grade equipment.
Packet fragmentation, QoS rules, gaming rules, range boost, 1GB ports for both LAN and WAN.
USB confiuration port (plug in your USB thumb drive and it will down load all of the settings that Vista and XP use for auto configuration).
add to that N series speeds.
Nothing like 145Mb wireless.

LOL.....

I had two of those DLink routers crap out on me, which lead to me getting the Linksys, which has worked perfectly for almost a year.....

Anyway, you have a variety of opinions.

BTW, I checked, and this is my router

INTEL QX9650 // Gigabyte EP45 Extreme // 8GB PC2-8500 // BFG GTX260 MaxCore // DD Torture Rack // Seagate 750GB HDD // OCZ Vendetta // PC Power & Cooling 620W PSU

Having a router crap out on you isn't necessarily by fault of the manufacture. There are many environmental variables that can come into play, and affect the life of any networking equipment. Faulty power in your work or home being the leading cause to networking device failure. So I wouldn't advise staying away from a specific brand just because someone else had one that failed on them.

When buying a router making sure that it has the features that you need is most important. Also buying a product with a good warranty will protect you in the event of a faulty device.

In my personal experience I have had no Linksys Routers fail on me. They are good routers, I just like the way my D-link Gaming Router performs better. What I don't like about the D-link firmware is that it's a little tricker to make changes manually. It wants you to use the wizards by default. It's more of an annoyance then anything else.

I have both the DIR-655 and the DGL-4100
both work great.

Just different experiences.....if I recall correctly, I switched from a Linksys originally because of bad luck with it.

I'm cruising along on a Linksys WRT54GL, one of the few out there compatible with third party firmware (I'm running Tomato).

Some work for some people and not for others. I just refuse to buy Linksys anymore to to constant problems with Linksys routers and any other hardware that ends up in my hands. My most recent one that made me decide was when I ordered one from Newegg in Feb., it worked for a week then died completely. Sent it back for a replacement and the replacement worked fine for about a week and a half until I could not get into the admin pages at all anymore from any computer and my internet had slowed to a crawl, about as bad as dialup. Tried resetting it, would work for a few hours and then same problem... so finally sent it back for a refund and got this SMC which has ran like a champ ever since. It was replacing another similar model SMC that ran for 8 years when a power surge finally took it out.

Thanks HL and Corsair!
