They (intel) are now offering celerons with a Conroe core!!!!!!! Single core, but then again I'm not going to use this comp very much either. Thanks justin for the heads up on the celeron idea!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, so I made the under $500 mark!!!!

CPU: Newegg.com - Intel Celeron 440 Conroe-L 2.0GHz 512KB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail - $63

MB/GPU: Newegg.com - MSI G965M-F LGA 775 Intel G965 Express Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - $89

RAM: Newegg.com - OCZ Gold 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail - $47

Case/PSU: Newegg.com - APEVIA X-QPACK2-BK/500 Black Aluminum Body/ Front Mask MicroATX Desktop Computer Case 500W Power Supply - Retail - $99

HDD: Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM - $70

OS: Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM - $112

Total came to: $480, sans tax/shipping.

What could I change/improve (while staying under the budget)?

I probably save up a little more, but for the time being, $500 (give or take) is the max.

Default Re: New SFF/Mini ATX Build!!

you could always step down to the celeron 430 or 420 to save even more cash. In the end, it would be overclocked anyway.

What on-board video comes with that mobo?

EDIT: the celeron 420 is only 45 dollars, which is about 20 bucks cheaper than the 440. You could better spend the 20 dollars on a cheap videocard.

EDIT: for instance, the asus 6200 is 35 dollars.

Newegg.com - ASUS EN6200TC256/TD/64M GeForce 6200TC 256MB(64MB on Board ) 64-bit DDR PCI Express x16 Low Profile Video Card - Retail

Or there is this 7300GT by PNY. This one is a little special though. Instead of the normal 64-bit interface, it comes with 128bit intferface AND it comes with 256mb of gddr2.

MIR $50

Yeah, but the thing is, that mobo DOES NOT oc well. The chipset on that board is the G965.

Overclocking any mATX, SFF system is not going to be easy. Firstly you can't fit much a heatsink in the case. second, those motherboards are not made with overclocking in mind, regardless of the chipset. Lastly, overclocking a Celeron is what some might say as "shining $h!t". Even if you get if overclocked a few hundred MHz, it's still going to be relatively slow compared to other mid-range systems. Those budge oriented Celeron processors are so cheap that you are better off spending an extra $10 - $15 on a higher speed processor than you are trying to overclock a lower one.
