| T-Rex | Quote: Seriously though, you're moving from DDR2-800 4x1GB with 4-4-4-12 timings to DDR2-800 with 5-6-6-18 timings which are pretty lax. I would try to stick to RAM with comparable timings, else if you don't plan to upgrade it might be better to stick with 4x1GB (tighter timings). However, since the OCZ kit has looser timings, it needs less voltage to run properly, and reduced voltage = reduce heat. It's not a big difference, but it's a difference nonetheless. Besides, with the components you chose, it wouldn't be very hard to overclock, may you be tempted by it one day or another. However it's somewhat more complicated to overclock with 4 sticks of RAM than only 2, as you add chances that 1 stick could barely overclock. It really is your choice, but I prefer the Crucial 4x1GB idea better than the OCZ Vista Upgrade 4GB kit. There's the OCZ Reaper HPC edition 2x2GB kit running for $95.99 after $25.00 MIR at the egg. Newegg.com - OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail There's also Patriot Extreme 2x2GB kit for $97.99 after $30.00 MIR Newegg.com - Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail And last but not the least, GeIL 2x2GB at $95.99 after $20.00 MIR Newegg.com - GeIL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail It's a good idea to consider the OCZ Reaper HPC edition height though, as it can come in some CPU coolers way. All in all though, memory performance is marginal between all kits and at their rated specs, if you take memory of the same specs, they should perform sensibly the same. |

| I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal. | Couple of suggestions: 1) I'm going to disagree with the Antec Neo HE suggestion. The Neo HE series suffered through some initial growing pains, particularly when paired with Asus boards (but not exclusively). Many users (more than a handful) had problems with the PSU dying, causing system lockups, etc., and though Antec supposedly addressed the issue in future revisions, we've seen the problem persist on later models. We had even stepped in to help one of our forum members (Captain Crunch) receive service after going hrough several failed Neo HE units. Not everyone was affected, and perhaps the issue is now moot on whatever revision they're currently on, but there are too many choices out there than to have to roll the dice. If factoring in mail-in-rebates, Antec's TrioPower 650W is priced attractively at $75 shipped. So are both the OCZ StealthXstream 500W ($58 shipped after $12 MIR) and 600W ($80 shipped after $10 MIR). 2) To give another perspective on the RAM, I'll say I like the OCZ kit you picked out. The rebated price is fantastic, and since you're not planning to overclock, I wouldn't worry too much about tighter timed chips. And if set to 2.0V, that kit could probably hold tighter timings anyway (YMMV). Different schools of thought, and really no right or wrong answer. |
