Alternative to XFX 8800GT
Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N802-AR GeForce 8800GT Superclocked 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

Better specs (core frequency is higher), eVGA iron warranty if you register your product in the first 30 days and same good price.

As for the memory I would always opt for 2 sticks instead of 4, more possibility to upgrade down the road and normally somewhat better performance. There's great 4GB 4-4-4-12 kits out there which can be had for around $95.00 after MIR, $15 over your plan of combining 4 sticks of Crucial together. It's all up to you though, the performance should be somewhat similar (though normally 2 sticks with same specs will perform better than 4).

Looks very nice Oldman!
But why go with a quad? What does your son do that requires one?
I know Crysis and COD4 now utilize all four cores but personally I'd go with an E8400.
Much cooler, cheaper, and doesn't use as much electricity.

Just curious

Yes and no. It's extremely difficult to kill a processor these days with all the safeguards available, and if the processor works, well, it works.

However, there's the risk of physical damage, which isn't technically covered. Few years back I was attempting to remove the retail heatsink, and it jerked the processor out of the socket, breaking a pin in the processor. Just like that, my infamous 2.4C (running at 3.4GHz, back when 1GHz were still impressive) was a paper weight, but I did convince Intel to replace it for me. I also helped a woman seeking tech advice to do the same with AMD after she had broken a pin in a similar manner - she assumed she was out of luck, but I convinced her to call AMD's tech support, and they sent her a replacement.

On a side note, not all vendors offer a 1 year warranty. OEM warranties are determined and honored by the vendor selling the CPU, and specifically with regards to Newegg, you have 7-days to return for a refund, or 30-days for a replacement (LINK), so you'll want to stress test it without dilly-dallying.

On another side note, OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM parts are basically intended for system builders that sell and support their rigs. Dell and HP are bigwig examples, but it could also be your local mom-and-pop store. Because of the price savings, OEM parts have become popular among DIY builders.

As Paul Harvey would say, there you have the rest of the story.

Nice choice for a CPU. Everything looks great except for the PSU. The FSP blue storm is a good unit but there are other choices. I'd say like an Antec Neo HE... The Neo HE have 5 year warranties and are rated at 50C.
The only CPUs I'd recommend right now are quad core like the Q6600, or a dual core such as E8400.

A better question is why not go with quad. If you can fit it in the build budget you should most defiantly go quad. Multi-cores are the future, and more and more apps are starting to take advantage of them. Sure you probably don't need them, but wanting holds just as much weight.

I agree, I'd go Evga over XFX. Not that XFX is bad, but I've had good experiences with Evga.

Not only that, but the product is better for the same price. What's not to like? :P
